People with Jha surname is Maithil brahmins a Brahmin who belongs to Mithila region of Bihar, Nepal and Santhal pargana of Jharkhand which considers General category ( forwarded caste ) in India. But not all individuals with Jha surname is necessarily Brahmins.

The surname Jha is short form of Sanskrit word Upadhyay which means Vedic teacher. In Vedic period teachers were called Upadhyay but in Pali language Upadhyay were called Uvvajjha, Uvajjha converted into Ojha and finally in Mithila region Ojha converted into Jha.
