Inbal Billie Nahum-Shani is a Research Professor at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. She is also the Director of the Data Science for Dynamic Decision-Making Center (d3c) at the U-M Institute for Social Research.[1]
Research and Contributions
[edit]Nahum-Shani's research focuses on the development and application of behavioral theories and methodologies for designing adaptive interventions. These interventions are designed to adjust the type, timing, dosage, or delivery method of support to address individuals’ changing needs.[1] A significant aspect of her work involves utilizing digital technology to enable real-time adaptation of interventions in daily life settings.[2]
She is known for her work in developing and extending experimental designs, including Factorial Designs,[3] Sequential Multiple Assignment Randomized Trials (SMARTs),[4] Micro-Randomized Trials (MRTs),[5] and Hybrid Experimental Designs (HEDs).[6] She has also been recognized for her work on defining and conceptualizing engagement in digital interventions, [7] which is an important consideration in the evaluation of digital health tools.
Her scholarly contributions to the field of adaptive interventions were recognized with the University of Michigan Research Faculty Recognition Award in 2017.[8] She has been invited to speak on her work in Hybrid Experimental Designs by Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine,[9] and in engagement in digital health by the McLean Institute for Technology in Psychiatry.[10]
Leadership
[edit]As Director of the Data Science for Dynamic Decision-making Center (d3c), Nahum-Shani oversees several major research initiatives, including a P50 Center of Excellence funded by the NIH and NIDA.[11] This initiative focuses on advancing experimental designs and data analytic methods to adapt and personalize services, particularly for drug use and HIV prevention and treatment.[12] Additionally, she serves as a Project PI for the NIH-funded Intensive Longitudinal Health Behavior Network.[13]
Nahum-Shani’s expertise in intervention research design has earned her leadership roles across various networks and organizations. She serves on the advisory boards for the Center for Technology and Behavioral Health at Dartmouth College[14] and the Northeast Node of the National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network.[15]
Her influence extends to editorial leadership, including serving on the editorial board of Academy of Management Discoveries[16] and acting as guest editor for a special issue of Frontiers in Digital Health on digital technology for tobacco control.[17]
