Iain Charles Morley KC, styled The Honourable Mr Justice Iain Morley KC (born 21 October 1965, Dublin), is a High Court Judge of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court (ECSC).[1] He has held this position since 2016, serving across various jurisdictions within the ECSC, including Antigua & Barbuda, St Kitts & Nevis, and Montserrat.[2]

Education

Morley was educated in Ireland at St Michael’s College, Dublin, and Rockwell College, Cashel.  He also attended St Stithian’s College in Johannesburg, South Africa, before studying law at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, where he graduated in 1987.[3]

In 1988, alongside Michael Hall, he won the World Universities Debating Championship for the Oxford Union at the University of Sydney.[3]

Career

Morley was called to the Bar by the Inner Temple in 1988 and practiced as a barrister specializing in criminal law at 1 Hare Court, Temple. In 1998, he joined 23 Essex Street, London. He was appointed King’s Counsel in 2009, and in 2010, he became a Bencher of the Inner Temple.[1]

Between 2004 and 2012, Morley was involved in international criminal practice at the United Nations tribunals for Yugoslavia, Rwanda, and Lebanon.[2] He gained recognition for his work in international law during this period.

Morley is also the author of The Devil’s Advocate, a globally recognized trial advocacy guide first published in 2005, with a third edition in 2015.[4][5][6]

In 2016, Morley was appointed a High Court Judge of the Eastern Caribbean Supreme Court, serving first in Antigua & Barbuda until 2021, and then in St Kitts & Nevis and Montserrat.[2] He has been co-chair of the ECSC Sentencing Guidelines Committee since 2017, and from 2019 to 2021, he served as the first judge of the ECSC Sexual Offenses Model Court.[2] As of 2024, he is also a Vice-Chair of the ECSC Judicial Education Institute.[2]

Family

In 1989, he married Dr. Jillian Morley with whom he has one daughter and two sons.[7]
