The historical reputation of Joe Biden, the 46th president of the United States, is currently an issue of undergoing scholarship.
Biden's handling of the Israel-Hamas War, 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, his decision to withdraw, and his support for Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee in the 2024 United States predidential election have been understood as key parts of his legacy.[1]
Initial opinion of Biden among historians, political scientists, international relations scholars,[2] and the general public has been negative.[3]
Presidency
[edit]Handling of foreign policy
[edit]Biden's presidency was dominated by the Israel-Hamas War and the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. According to Indrek Kannik of International Center Defense and Security, Biden's legacy will be that of weakness in foreign policy.[2]
Overall reputation
[edit]According to historian Franklin Foer, Biden's presidency will be remembered in a predominantly negative way, stating that: "Joe Biden can not escape that his four years paved the way for the return of Donald Trump. Everything else is an asterisk."[4]
