Hip Hop Macedonia (HHM) is an organization established in 1999 in Skopje, North Macedonia. It is the first Macedonian organization that advocates for the affirmation, advancement and protection of hip hop culture, through lectures, concerts, books, film, music, magazine and promotion of hip hop culture in high education institutions and cultural centers.
Activities
[edit]The members of the organization have so far published 3 books about hip-hop culture (Aspects of Macedonian Urban Culture - Hip Hop Macedonia in 2005, Hip Hop Book in 2007 and English-Macedonian Hip Hop Dictionary in 2008), as members of the groups Klan Istok (Clan East) and Braka po krv (Brothers By Blood) released 5 music albums, recorded two documentaries (The Puzzle, 2015 and New York: The Pilgrimage, 2020)[1][2]
and held over 50 lectures about hip-hop culture in Josip Broz Tito High School of Skopje and Orce Nikolov secondary schools (2005, 2006), the Faculty of Philosophy (2008, 2009) and at the Faculty of Music (2019) at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University of Skopje, then American Corner, in the Tochka Cultural Center in Skopje, Bitola Open City in Bitola, Struga, Sveti Nikole, etc.[3][4]
HHM is the organizer of the first scientific forum on hip-hop culture at the Cultural Studies Department of the Institute of Macedonian Literature in Skopje, in which 7 distinguished university professors from North Macedonia took part (Antoanela Petkovska, Risto Solunchev, Vangel Nonevski, Maja Jakimovska-Tosic, Dejan Metodijeski, as well Slavcho Koviloski and Aleksandar Koviloski).[5]
Hip Hop Macedonia is the first Macedonian organization that has held a lecture as part of the Hip Hop Made In Macedonia project, and the members of Clan East, Profo and Brother Alek, have performed at MC Gallery and Nuyorican Poets Café, New York.[6]
HHM has organized the first Macedonian Hip Hop Awards (2009), published the first Macedonian online hip-hop magazine Magazine 4 (2010-2013), and organized the first Macedonian Hip Hop Poetry Slam (2019).[7]
In the period from 2007 to 2010, Brother Alek was hosting the TV show Hip-Hop Magazine, broadcasted on the First Channel of the Macedonian Radio Television. Brother Alek is the organizer of music festivals, Gazi Baba Hip Hop Fest and Sveti Nikole Hip Hop Fest.[8][9]
HHM member Profo is the author of a series of 9 columns dedicated to hip-hop published in the oldest Macedonian newspaper, The Nova Makedonija, and the initiator of the founding of the first international scientific journal in North Macedonia and Southeast Europe, Balkan Hip Hop Studies. Оn his initiative at the Cultural Studies Department in Skopje, the subculture course was established where students have the opportunity to study hip-hop culture at academic level for the first time in the Balkans.[10]
In the activities of Hip Hop Macedonia, several Macedonian hip hop artists and members of the organization (DJ Boogie Man, Kacar, Deco) and the organization supporters (Toni Zen, DJ Goce Saf, Piksi) have significantly contributed to the revival, maintenance and promotion of the Macedonian hip hop culture both in the country and abroad.
