- Comment: From a cursory search, this is probably redeemable as WP:N as the subject appears to have received WP:SIGCOV in a number of WP:RS (e.g. [1], [2], [3], etc.). In its current form, however, none of the existing references are WP:INDEPENDENT of the subject. I'm certain this shortcoming can be quickly remedied. Chetsford (talk) 16:27, 2 December 2024 (UTC)
The Higher Education Scholarships for Palestinians (HESPAL) is a consortium scholarship program designed to support the academic development of Palestinian university staff and enhance the quality of education in Palestinian universities. HESPAL was inaugurated by Director of Communication at the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office Dr Alastair McPhail in an event held in Gaza City.[1][2] HESPAL is funded and managed by the British Council, often in partnership with various UK universities such as Kings College London, St Mary's University, Twickenham, Lancaster University, and the University of Glasgow.[3][4][5][6]
History
[edit]In 2016, The British Consul-General in Jerusalem, Dr. Alastair McPhail, organized a reception in Gaza City to honor graduates of British government scholarship programs. This event recognized the accomplishments of Gazan alumni from the Chevening and HESPAL scholarship initiatives who pursued their studies in the UK."We are here to celebrate you, graduates of some of the finest universities in the UK. Each of you is making significant contributions to Palestinian society. I am glad that the UK has played a role, however small, in supporting your efforts here."[7][1]
This scholarship was created in the context of devastated destruction by Israel in Palestine and students are trapped while all universities in the country are not functional especially after the Israel Hamas war started in October 2023.[7][8][9]
