Jacob Tyler Thureson (January 11, 2001 - June 27, 2019) know by his stage name Hella Sketchy, was an American rapper and singer-songwriter. He gained popularity on SoundCloud and was signed to Atlantic Records before his untimely death at the age of 18.
Personal life
[edit]Jacob was born on January 11, 2001, in Manila, Philippines. Thureson moved to Austin, Texas, with his family, where he immersed himself in music from a young age. As a teenager, Thureson began producing beats and uploading them to SoundCloud, where he quickly gained a following. Despite his rising fame, he struggled with depression and substance abuse, which ultimately led to his death. [1][2][3]
Career
[edit]Hella Sketchy began his musical journey on SoundCloud, where he became known for his "happy trap" beats. By the age of 14, he was recognized as one of the top underground trap producers. His viral hit "Spent a Check" in 2017 further boosted his profile, leading to a significant following online. [1]
In March 2019, he released a self-titled mixtape under Cupid Soldiers, which helped him secure a contract with Atlantic Records. He relocated to Los Angeles, California, to focus on his music career. His time in LA was marked by intense studio sessions and collaboration with other artists, which showcased his creative talents and dedication to his craft. [1][2]
Death and legacy
[edit]On June 13, 2019, Thureson was found unresponsive due to a drug overdose. He was hospitalized and placed in a coma for 14 days before passing away on June 27, 2019. His death underscored the devastating impact of the opioid crisis and highlighted the need for open discussions about mental health and substance abuse. Despite his brief career, Hella Sketchy left a lasting impact on the music community, with his unique style and emotive beats continuing to inspire many. [2]
