Helen Hong (Chinese: 洪海泠; pinyin: Hóng Hǎilíng; born 22 November 1996), also credited as helenny, is a Chinese-American composer, singer-songwriter, and record producer. Known for her media production versatility, Hong has worked with a range of clients including Disney, Ferrari, JZ Festival, Dots, and Tencent Music.
In 2024, she released her feature song Soliloquy 《一个人的表演》 for the Taiwanese film Daughter's Daughter.[1][2][3]
Early life
[edit]Hong was born on 22 November 1996 in Mountain View, California, and raised in Shanghai, China. She began studying classical piano from the age of five and earned early recognition for her musicality and ear for improvisation. She attended Yew Chung International School and Shanghai American School, where she sang and performed actively in jazz ensembles, musical theatre, open mics, and began to experiment with songwriting.[4]
Hong graduated from Wellesley College in 2018[5], where she studied music, computer science, and multimedia production at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 2020, she graduated from Berklee College of Music with a Master's degree in film scoring.
Musical career and style
[edit]After completing her studies, Hong returned to Shanghai. From 2020 to 2023, she produced music for The Voice of China, Fiture, Tencent Music Entertainment Awards[6], Ximalaya FM, Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and served as music director for Ferrari's 30 Years in China anniversary launch.[7][8]
In 2022, Hong experienced Shanghai's covid-19 city-wide lockdown. Quarantined at home, she wrote and produced a collection of songs for meditation, most notably《沉香》, with lyrics by Feng Tang.[9]
Hong's music is described widely as healing and emotive.[10] Among both Chinese and Western listeners, her sound has garnered attention for its intricate control of vocals and production, blending elements of alternative pop, contemporary jazz, and Chinese ballad OST.[11] She has cited Ryuichi Sakamoto, Esperanza Spalding, and Jay Chou as her greatest artistic influences, naming Sakamoto as her catalyst into media scoring.
