[edit]Dr. Heiko Visarius[1] (b. 1966) is a Swiss-German executive, entrepreneur, and academic with over three decades of experience in the healthcare sector, particularly within the medical device industry. He is the founder and current managing director of VISARTIS Healthcare GmbH, a consultancy specializing in life sciences, business development, and board mandates. Dr. Visarius has held numerous leadership roles in both multinational corporations and startups, and he is recognized for his contributions to innovation and business strategy in medical technology.[2]
Early life and education
[edit]Heiko Visarius[3] was born in Germany in 1966. His academic journey is distinguished by a series of degrees from prestigious institutions across Europe and the United States. He began his academic career by earning a Diplom-Ingenieur (Dipl.-Ing.) degree in engineering from Ruhr University Bochum, Germany, in 1991. Following this, he pursued advanced studies in bioengineering, culminating in a Ph.D. from Wayne State University, USA, in 1994.[4]
While furthering his career, Dr. Visarius also enhanced his business acumen by obtaining an MBA from GSBA Zurich in Switzerland, and New York, USA, in 2003. He later added to his qualifications by obtaining a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in Board of Directors governance from a joint program between Switzerland and the USA in 2024. This diverse academic background equipped him with the expertise to navigate complex technological and business challenges in the life sciences and healthcare sectors.[5]
Early career and research (1994-1996)
[edit]Dr. Visarius began his professional career as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bern and Inselspital, one of Switzerland's leading medical centers. His research focused on surgical technologies and biomechanics, particularly in the area of developing medical devices aimed at improving surgical outcomes. During this time, he was part of the Institute for Surgical Technology and Biomechanics (ISTB), which is known for its groundbreaking work in medical engineering and biomechanics. His contributions to early-stage medical research laid the foundation for his later career in the medical device industry.[6]
Entry into the Medical Device Industry (1996-2012)
[edit]In 1996, Dr. Visarius made a significant shift from academia to the medical device industry by joining Medivision, a startup within the Synthes Group, a prominent company in the field of orthopedic devices. At Medivision, he served as CEO and was responsible for the company’s development until its successful exit in 2003. This experience marked Dr. Visarius' entry into the business side of medical technology, where he demonstrated a strong ability to combine technical expertise with strategic business leadership.[7]
After the exit of Medivision, Dr. Visarius took on several leadership roles at Synthes, which later became DePuy Synthes after its acquisition by Johnson & Johnson. During his tenure, he was a key member of the executive committee and played a pivotal role in growing the company’s European operations, focusing on expanding into new markets. His work at Synthes positioned him as a leading figure in the global medtech industry.[8]
In 2003, Dr. Visarius joined Medtronic, one of the world's largest medical technology companies, where he held various strategic positions over nearly a decade. He initially served as Marketing Director for Europe and then progressed to Business Director for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland (DACH region). Eventually, he became the Senior Director for Core Spine in Europe, overseeing a three-digit million USD revenue portfolio. He was also responsible for emerging markets, including India, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. His leadership helped Medtronic expand its operations in these regions, navigating the complexities of healthcare systems and regulatory environments in both developed and developing markets.[9]
Founding of VISARTIS Healthcare GmbH (2012-Present)
[edit]In 2012, after nearly two decades in the corporate world, Dr. Visarius founded VISARTIS Healthcare GmbH, a consultancy firm based in Switzerland. VISARTIS Healthcare provides tailored advisory services in the healthcare and life sciences sectors, focusing on strategic business development, startup coaching, and board governance. The company has a wide range of mandates, from advising large corporations and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) to coaching early-stage startups.
VISARTIS Healthcare is active in five primary areas

He also serves as a coach under the European Union's Horizon 2020 program, providing expertise to innovative companies across Europe.

- Academic Involvement: Dr. Visarius continues to contribute to academia as a visiting lecturer at various Swiss universities, including ZHAW, HSLU, University of Bern, FHNW, and ETH Zurich. His public speaking engagements often focus on innovation in medical technology, business strategy in healthcare, and the challenges of scaling life sciences startups.[11]
Personal life
[edit]Dr. Heiko Visarius resides in Switzerland with his family. Outside of his professional life, he is an avid sports enthusiast and actively engages in endurance sports.
