Harinder Singh Dhaliwal is an Indian politician and a candidate for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the 2024 by-election from Barnala, Punjab.[1][2] He is contesting in the by-election triggered by the vacancy left by Meet Hayer, who was elected as a Member of Parliament from Sangrur in June 2024.[3][4]
Background
[edit]Harinder Singh Dhaliwal is a Barnala-based politician with a BTech degree.[5] Dhaliwal shares a long-standing association with Hayer, they attended the same school, Baba Gandha Singh Public School in Barnala, and pursued their BTech at Swami Vivekanand Institute of Engineering and Technology in Banur[5]. Dhaliwal joined AAP a decade ago, often campaigning alongside Hayer, who previously served as a Cabinet Minister.[6] Dhaliwal's candidacy in Barnala marks his first election.
2024 Barnala By-Election
[edit]The 2024 Barnala by-election, held after Meet Hayer's election as a Member of Parliament from Sangrur, marks Harinder Singh Dhaliwal's entry into electoral politics. Dhaliwal's candidacy faced competition from within AAP, with names like Dalvir Singh Goldy and Gurdeep Singh Batth also under consideration. Following the ticket announcement, Goldy left the party, and Batth declared his intention to run as an independent candidate.[7][8][9] Batth has since been expelled by the party.[10] Dhaliwal has gained support from previous BJP candidate Dheeraj Kumar Dadahur.[11]
