Last, almost everything is primary, i.e. cites his or Rutgers info so is not independent. Haim Baruh[1] is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of Rutgers University.[2] He is the sole author of two university textbooks on dynamics.[3] Baruh is also Director[4] of the New Jersey Space Grant Consortium (NJSGC), which is funded by NASA to support aerospace and space science research and education, as well as create STEM networks statewide.[5]

Early life and education

Baruh, who was born in 1954, grew up on the European side of Istanbul, Turkey. His father, Yasef (Joe) Baruh, was a manger in a company that imported machinery. His mother, Ester Baruh née Heskia, was one of the first female college graduates in Turkey with a degree in economics. He has a sister, Oret, who lives in Istanbul. His uncle, Selim Baruh, M.D., a member of The 147, made it possible for Baruh to attend graduate school.[6]

Baruh attended English High School for Boys and Robert College, both private high schools in Istanbul. He graduated from Robert College in 1972.[7] He received a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in mechanical engineering from Boğaziçi University in 1976. He then moved to the United States. Baruh attended Virginia Tech, where he received a Master of Science (M.S.) in Engineering Mechanics in 1978 and a Ph.D. in 1982.[2] His Ph.D. dssertation was titled “Parameter identification and control of distributed-parameter systems”.[8] He is a member of Sigma Xi,[9] the scientific research honor society.

Academic career

Baruh joined the faculty of the School of Engineering of Rutgers University in 1983. There he teaches more than 15 aerospace and mechanical engineering courses and conducts research in structural dynamics, control systems and impact mechanics.[10] He is also the author of over 75 scientific publications,[11] of which over 40 are archival journal publications.[10]

Baruh was graduate program director of Rutgers’ Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering 2002-2009[10] and Associate Dean for Graduate Education in Engineering at the Rutgers School of Engineering, 2008-2012.[12] He was instrumental in developing the B.S.-M.S. program[13], as well as the Master of Engineering (M.E.) degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering[14], and the B.S. degree in aerospace engineering[15], in the Rutgers School of Engineering.

In addition to grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF)[16] and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA),[17] Baruh has completed four U.S. federal grants, made by NASA, to fund the activities of the New Jersey Space Grant Consortium (NJSGC) starting in 2009[18] and is now directing a fifth NASA grant,[1] starting in 2019, to promote STEM education and research.[2] The Consortium he heads includes more than 20 higher education institutions in New Jersey.[19] He served as Secretary of the Executive Council of the National Council of NASA Space Grant Directors (2012-2021).[20]

Baruh was elected an Associate Fellow[21] of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1995.[22]

He has given guest lectures at Tel Aviv University and Technion – Israel Institute of Technology in 2002, Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in 2016, and the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) in 2017[23] and 2018.

Personal life

Baruh resides in Highland Park, New Jersey. He is married to Rahel/Rosanne J. Baruh, an attorney. They have three children, Esther, Naomi and Yosef (Joey).[31]

He has been President[32] and is now First |Vice-President[33] of Congregation Etz Ahaim,[34] an Orthodox Sephardic synagogue in Highland Park.

In addition to English, Baruh speaks Turkish and Ladino.
