HOWL (stylized in capital letters) is a UK vocal ensemble known for blending diverse musical influences into complex harmonies and haunting soundscapes. They perform original compositions along with arrangements of folk songs and works by composers such as Meredith Monk, Moondog, and Caroline Shaw.[1] The group has collaborated with notable artists such as Cosmo Sheldrake and released their second EP, Night Creatures in 2024.[1]

History

[edit]

HOWL made their first appearance touring in 2021 and toured with London singer-songwriter Cosmo Sheldrake later that year.[2] HOWL introduced their first eponymous EP the following year under Sheldrake's Tardigrade Records.[3] Sheldrake promoted the album on his social media after the release, saying "I was lucky to have helped record it!"[4][5]

On 5 April 2024, the group published their second EP Night Creatures, a collaboration with writer Robert Macfarlane.[6]

On 2 May 2024, their official YouTube channel was created.[7] Since then they have posted videos of the group performing songs such as "Fallen Sun (Glow-worm)" and "Hawthorn".[8] The sound for their YouTube productions is mixed by Upcycled Sounds.[9][10]

Later in 2024 they collaborated with Sheldrake for the songs "Does The Swallow Dream Of Flying" and "The Feet Are The Link" on his Eye To The Ear album.[11] They performed a live recording of "Does The Swallow Dream Of Flying" for NPR's WXPN World Cafe in July.[12]

Night Creatures on vinyl and a matching artwork poster are the only products for sale on their Bandcamp as of September, 2024.[13]
