Early Life and Career
[edit]Darius was born on August 30, 1994 in Brooklyn of New York City, New York.
Little of his childhood is known, other than he first began rapping at age nine when he would "borrow" his brother's CDs and study the music. When he hit age 12, he and his friends started a rap group, where they would record their freestyles and put them on cassette tapes. At age 14, Darius learned to produce his own beats, and with this new skill, he garnered the nickname "Hitmaker D", to which was shortened to "HD", as stated in an interview:
"Hitmaker D sounds stupid. So I’ve shorten it to HD. As I started making more music and taking it seriously, I thought ‘I don’t want to be known for making hits, I just want to make real music.’ Now, what HD stands for is high quality. I’m just trying to give you the best I can. And for me, BeenDope means recognizing your potential before anybody else."
At age 16, he released his first mixtape Backpack Rap, where he rapped his own verses over existing, well-known instrumentals of popular rap songs. A year later, he released his second mixtape Since '94, which garnered him a following online. In 2013, he released his third mixtape, Stepping Into Tomorrow. In 2015, he released his first studio album, The Greay(t) Area. A year later, he released his second studio album, Pheace Be The Journey.
Four years later in 2020, he would release his third studio album, Broken Dreams. Darius states the album is centered around a tour with popular Indie band Portugal. The Man during 2017, and the album details his mindset and livelyhood from that time.
Between 2020 and majority of 2022, Darius would release various singles and a collaborative extended play with producer Earl on the Beat, which released on October 22, 2021.
On September 6, 2022, Darius would be signed to Jay-Z’s label Roc Nation, and release his debut extended play, What Can They Say, on October 21, 2022.
