The Gurkha Memorial Museum commemorates the service of Gurkha soldiers to the British Army, Indian Army and Gurkha Contingent. It is located in Pokhara in Nepal.
History
[edit]The Gurkha Memorial Museum was established by the Gurkha Memorial Trust in 1994. The museum's first premises was in a small apartment in Lainchaur, Kathmandu. [1]
Between 1994 and 2001, the museum's collection grew through donations from ex-Ghurkhas and The Gurkha Museum, England.
In August 2001, the museum moved to Pokhara, the city which is home to the British Gurkha Camp where the annual selection course for new recruits is held [2].
In 2004, the museum moved to its current site next to the British Gurkha Camp.
In 2015, the museum constructed a replica of the Dehra Dun Regimental Lal Gate in the museum's car park. The replica was unveiled by Field Marshal John Chapple. [3]
In 2019, the museum had 60,000 visitors. [2]
Exhibitions
[edit]The ground floor covers the history of Gurkhas in action including WW1, WW2, the Malayan Emergency and the Falklands War.
The first floor covers customs and traditions of different Gurkha regiments.
The second floor covers the work of specialist regiments like the Queen's Gurkha Engineers. [4]
