Draft:GeeCON Conference

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

GeeCON Conference is a developer-focused community conference series launched in 2009 by the Polish Java User Group and Poznań Java User Group. The conference takes place twice a year: in Kraków (May) and in Prague (October). Community-driven and featuring international speakers, GeeCON has gained a strong reputation among developers, managers, and executives across Europe, particularly for its focus on Java and the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) ecosystem.

The inaugural edition featured 26 speakers and 6 sponsors, including notable names like Sun Microsystems and SpringSource. Due to significant contributions from the Poznań Java User Group, the conference was held in Multikino Poznań in 2010 and 2012, instead of Kraków. GeeCON expanded further in 2014 with its first Prague edition, held at CineStar in Centrum Černý Most, where it continues to take place.

GeeCON is centered around Java and JVM-based technologies, with a special emphasis on dynamic languages such as Groovy and Scala. The conference serves as a platform for discussing modern software development methodologies, enterprise architectures, software craftsmanship, design patterns, distributed computing, and more. It attracts attendees from various professional backgrounds who are eager to learn about the latest developments in Java and related fields.

The event features a mix of invited speakers and presentations selected from a call for papers, showcasing the most innovative and relevant technologies. Over the years, GeeCON has drawn more than 12,000 attendees, most of whom have rated the event highly for its organization, content, and affordable ticket prices. The conference's success is attributed to its world-class speakers, engaging presentations, and its vibrant community atmosphere.

GeeCON is organized by the community, for the community, with technical user groups from around the world—including Poland, Italy, France, Belgium, Egypt, Brazil, Austria, and Ukraine—contributing to the event’s continuous improvement. In past editions, GeeCON has hosted free community events such as JUGs@GeeCON (2010) and GeeCON Community Day (2011).

In addition to its main events, GeeCON has held specialized conferences, including editions in Sopot in 2015 and 2016 focused on Reactive technologies, and the GeeCON 4 Kids workshops in 2013 and 2014 aimed at introducing young attendees to technology.

The conference was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting both the Kraków and Prague editions.
