Draft:Garage On Granite

The Garage On Granite is a five story concrete parking structure, located in downtown Prescott, Arizona built in June of 2005 by DFDG Architecture, and surveyed in early 2005 by M. Haywood Assoc. The garage is the only recreation parking structure in Prescott, as well as the largest parking structure in Yavapai County.

Location

Designers of the garage wanted to pick an area that would improve traffic flow as well as fit in with the surrounding area. The designers utilized design elements from near by historic buildings including the generous use of sandstone. Designers also took advantage of local scenery, to create a viewing experience of Thumb Bute from the entrance point of the stair entrance on Granite Street, as well as the glass backed elevator. along with this, direct pedestrian access to a cross alley that separates businesses on Whiskey Row from the garage was added. This allowed pedestrians traveling from the garage to whiskey row to bypass vehicular traffic.

Local Popularity

Apart from its primary function for parking, the garage is notably recognized locally as a hot spot for drug use and a gathering place for adolescents and substance abusers. Consequently, the garage has acquired an unfavorable reputation within the community, widely regarded as an area unsuitable for public congregation. The Prescott Police Department patrol the garage and the surrounding areas regularly.
