Freddy Fazbear is a fictional character and titular mascot of the Five Nights at Freddy's franchise created by Scott Cawthon.[1]

While multiple variants of Freddy Fazbear exist in the franchise, he is typically depicted as an animatronic brown bear bearing a black top hat and bow tie.

Inspiration

[edit]

Freddy, as well as the other animatronics in Five Nights at Freddy’s, were conceived after Cawthon recieved criticism of the characters in his previous work, Chipper & Sons Lumber Co., where, according to Cawthon, “people said that the main character looked like a scary animatronic animal." Cawthon, though originally dejected from the criticism, then was inspired to create the first Five Nights at Freddy's game, with Freddy bearing a striking resemblance to Chipper.[2]

Appearances

[edit]

Freddy makes his debut in the first game in the series, Five Nights at Freddy's. He is the last animatronic to activate, and the hardest to track on the game's camera system, as he hides in the shadows. He will also be the animatronic to play the Toreador Song and kill the player upon running out of power.

Freddy makes his second appearance in the prequel Five Nights at Freddy's 2, with two variations: an old and decayed version known as Withered Freddy that is used for spares, and a redesigned, sleeker Toy Freddy. It is mentioned at the end of the game that Toy Freddy has been scrapped while Withered Freddy is retained for use at the restaurant from the first game.

Freddy makes another appearance in the third game, Five Nights at Freddy's 3, this time acting as a hallucination called Phantom Freddy. His appearance is unique in this game as he is unable to kill the player similar to the other "phantom" animatronics, instead simply disabling the building's HVAC system. It is also revealed through the game's hidden "minigames", that the original game's Freddy was dismantled by his creator, William Afton, shortly after the events of the first game.

Freddy makes his next appearance in the series' fourth game, Five Nights at Freddy's 4. In this game, Freddy manifests as a nightmarish version of his usual self, titled Nightmare Freddy and is accompanied by smaller versions called "Freddles" that appear on the player's bed.

In the fifth game in the series, Five Nights at Freddy's: Sister Location, Freddy has been redesigned using brighter colours to fit the aesthetic of the game and is called Funtime Freddy. He is equipped with a hand puppet of Bonnie called BonBon, who can be used to calm Freddy down. He only appears on the second and third nights of the game, owing to its more linear nature. He is fused with the other animatronics to create Ennard at the end of the game.

In Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria Simulator, there is once again two variations of Freddy: Rockstar Freddy, an animatronic that can be used to decorate the player's pizzeria; and Molten Freddy, an animatronic implied to be the remains of Ennard from the previous game, who can be found on the street and salvaged.
