Fitzalan Square/Ponds Forge is a tram stop on the South Yorkshire Supertram network, opened on 21 March 1994.[1] It is located in Sheffield city centre, in a reserved tram-only section adjacent to Commercial Street. It sits on the corner of Commercial Street and Haymarket (roads). It serves Fitzalan Square and Ponds Forge International Sports Centre.
It was the first South Yorkshire Supertram stop to open in Sheffield city centre, and was the southern terminus of the line to Meadowhall, and later the northern terminus of the line to Spring Lane and Gleadless Townend.
History
[edit]The new Supertram network arose from ambitions held by the SYPTE, which had been assigned the role of public transport co-ordination in the area. Financial approval was given by the Department of Transport in late 1990, allowing the construction to begin the next year.
This stop was opened along with the section between it and Meadowhall Interchange on 21 March 1994. This section partially runs along a former heavy rail alignment. Later, in August 1994, a line from Fitzalan Square to Spring Lane opened, and was later extended to Gleadless Townend in December 1994. Since then, the line has expanded further to Halfway and a short branch to Herdings Park was also constructed.
Layout
[edit]The stop has two low-level side platforms, and is accessible via pedestrian tram crossings and two short ramps at each end of the platforms. This provides step-free access for passengers.
At the centre of each platform, passenger information displays stand and show estimated arrival times for trams.
Services
[edit]The Blue and Yellow routes have a peak frequency of every 12 minutes, the Purple route runs hourly Monday−Saturday and every 30 minutes (peak frequency) on Sundays, and the Tram-Train route (Black) runs every 30 minutes.
