Filip Philippe (born 21 June 1952) is a Belgian visual artist known for his diverse oeuvre. In his figurative work, he relativises the content by often using white paint to paint over the external and only focus on the internal. Using symbols and signs he speaks to the essence of existence.[1]
Early life and education
[edit]Filip Philippe was born on June 21 1952 in Veurne and grew up in Koksijde. He began his journey into the world of art with a solid academic foundation. He studied Greek-Latin at the College of Veurne, laying the foundation for a lifelong exploration of the profound and the symbolic.[2]
From 1982 until 1988 he studied at the Academy of Koksijde. He started with graphics and drawing, later he immersed himself in painting, sculpture and art theory. He then took private lessons with the artist Batis for 10 years, where his training included the techniques of the old masters.[3]
Oeuvre
[edit]In Filip Philippe’s diverse body of work, several distinct themes emerge. Alongside the central theme present in each piece. One prominent theme is the artist’s personal connection to his loved ones, including his mother, women, and the animal world, reflecting a focus on existential themes.[4][5]
In several other works, ‘God’ and ‘happiness’ are the theme, with the artist defining happiness as ‘ecstasy and contentment’. Notable are the many white-painted works, where he tells his own backstory, such as the white work in a gilded frame. ‘That's my mother, who worked hard all her life. When she died, she was no longer physically beautiful, but her inner self was. That is what the most beautiful piece of silk in existence refers to, with a tear in it. In many other white works, you only see piercing eyes and a mouth. Sometimes I cut away a piece, or made a hole in it. I painted over the original scenes to draw attention only to the essence: the inner. I also make that same link by mixing my paint with milk.’[3]
His art can be described as magic realism, with an emphasis on the intrinsic meaning rather than the external appearance or the colors within the abstract form. This meaning is conveyed through a range of symbols that may be either intentionally or unintentionally integrated into his work.[5]
the 7 non-figurative ‘Action Paintings’ in the style of Jackson Pollock, each incorporating a 7. ‘That 7 stands for spirituality, inner wisdom, spiritual enlightenment, mysticism, intuition, introspection, thoughtfulness and collective consciousness. But the number also indicates the importance of isolation, philosophy, perfection, dignity, the ability to set limits, inner strength and perseverance.’[3]
