Faruk Kaba

[edit]

Faruk Kaba (born 1945) is a prominent Albanian civil engineer, educator, and consultant, recognized for his contributions to Albania’s transport infrastructure development.[1] His career spans over five decades, during which he has designed thousands of kilometers of roads, bridges, and other transport structures across Albania. His work has influenced national road standards and master plans, making him one of the most experienced professionals in Albanian civil engineering.

Early Life

[edit]

Faruk Kaba was born in Tirana, Albania, on September, 10th, 1945.[2] He is one of five children. His paternal grandparents moved to Tirana from Debar in the early 20th century. In 1968, he graduated from the Polytechnic University of Tirana with a degree in Civil Engineering and Architecture. In 1970, he married Teuta Zajmi, of Tirana[3]. Together, they have two sons, Elvis (born 1972) and Dorian (born 1976). He has five grandchildren. His brother-in-laws were prominent Albanian artists, Agim Zajmi and Bujar Zajmi.

Career

[edit]

In 1969, Mr. Kaba began his career as a consulting engineer at the State Institute for Roads and Railways Study and Design in Tirana, focusing on road, highway, and bridge design. He became Head of the Department for Primary Road Design, managing the design of over 800 kilometers of roads and several bridges between 1969 and 1980.

By 1980, he was appointed Director of the Department of Studies and Design for Albania's main road network under the Ministry of Transport.[4] This department became the Institute of Transport Studies in 1985, where Mr. Kaba served as department director.

In 1991, he co-founded InfraTransProject, one of the first engineering companies in Albania.[5] InfraTransProject led the engineering consultancy sector since the fall of communism in Albania.

In 1994, after establishing a state agency for road management (now the Albanian Road Authority), he became its first General Director. From 1995 to 2018, he served as Managing Director and Senior Technical Director at InfraTransProject.

Academic Contributions

[edit]

Mr. Kaba earned his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering in 1984, with a thesis focusing on soil deformation modules for pavement and overlay design, a field where he remained Albania’s sole Ph.D. holder until 2015.[6] He has lectured extensively, offering a set of 64 lectures on “Roads and Road Construction” at the Polytechnic University of Tirana, marking the first full course on this subject in Albania.

From 2001 onward, Mr. Kaba continued teaching at universities across the region[7], including the Metropolitan University of Tirana, European University of Tirana, Tetovo State University, and Tirana State University.

Accomplishments

[edit]

Throughout his career, Mr. Kaba has contributed to over 3,800 kilometers of road designs, including the North South Corridor (similar to the Adriatic-Ionian Corridor) and the Arberi Road Corridor.[8] He led the drafting of Albania’s national road design standards and authored the “Draft Road Network Masterplan of Albania, 1988-1991.

In 2000, he co-founded the Albanian Association of Consulting Engineers (AACE), becoming its first president.[9] AACE, a member of FIDIC since 2001, has since organized two significant road infrastructure congresses in Albania. Mr. Kaba has also been a permanent member of the National Council of Roads, chaired by the Prime Minister, and a member of the New York Science Academy since 2004.

Today, Mr. Kaba remains active in academia and consultancy, leaving a legacy on Albania’s road and transportation infrastructure.
