Euron Greyjoy is a fictional character created by George R. R. Martin, appearing in the epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire, and in its HBO television adaptation, Game of Thrones. In the television series, he is portrayed by Danish actor Pilou Asbæk. In the novels, Euron serves as an unseen character for much of the story, until becoming one of the main antagonists in A Feast for Crows (2005) as a claimant to the throne of his recently deceased brother, Balon Greyjoy, King of the Iron Islands and the North.[1]
Euron Greyjoy, called Crow's Eye,[2] is an accomplished raider, pirate, and political leader, sailing aboard his ship, The Silence. Euron is the second son of Quellon by his second wife, and is the brother to Balon, Victarion, Urrigon, and Aeron, as well as the half-brother to Harlon and Robin Greyjoy, both of whom are deceased at the start of the series, along with Urrigon.[3] Euron is also the paternal uncle to Balon's children, Rodrik, Maron, Asha, and Theon. Euron in the novels is first mentioned in the appendix of A Game of Thrones but becomes a large threat in the third book, A Storm of Swords in which Balon Greyjoy suddenly dies and Euron returns from exile two days later. Despite the efforts of Victarion, Aeron, and Asha, Euron is chosen to be king at the kingsmoot, being crowned as Euron III.[4] Euron Greyjoy is considered by many as one of the most evil characters in the A Song of Ice and Fire series, rivaling Joffrey Baratheon and Ramsay Bolton in sadism, bloodlust, and cruelty.
