Emmanuel Ndubuisi Chiejina (born April 14, 1950) is a Nigerian businessman, lawyer, investor, and philanthropist. With a career spanning over four decades, Emmanuel has made significant contributions to the Oil and Gas, Finance and Insurance sectors in Nigeria. He is a former Deputy Managing Director of TotalEnergies Ltd (E&P Nigeria) and a former Director of Access Bank Plc.

Emmanuel was the first Chairman of the Governing Council of Institute of Petroleum and Energy Studies at the University of Port Harcourt. He holds several high-ranking positions in various Nigerian companies such as Chairman of Ashbard Energy Company Ltd and Catering and Facilities Solutions Ltd, among other business ventures where he provides strategic guidance.

Early Life and Education

Emmanuel Ndubuisi Chiejina was born on April 14, 1950, in Ubulu-Uku, Aniocha South, Delta State, Nigeria. He attended the University of Lagos, where he earned a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree in 1975. After graduating, he attended the Nigerian Law School and was called to the Nigerian Bar Association in 1976.

Chiejina pursued further education at prestigious institutions, including the Cranfield School of Management, INSEAD (AMP, IDP), London Business School, Harvard Business School, Colombia Business School and the International Public Relations School of the University of London. His advanced studies helped him develop expertise in areas such as management, strategy, public relations and business administration.

Career

Oil and Gas Industry

Chiejina began his career in the Oil and Gas industry in 1980 when he joined Elf Petroleum Nigeria Limited (EPNL), the International French oil giant now known as Total Energies. He started as an Industrial Relations Officer and quickly advanced through the company’s ranks, holding various roles, including General Manager of Human Resources and Executive General Manager of External Affairs and Executive Director of Corporate Develpoment. His achievements in these roles included pioneering a company Pension Scheme and enhancing external relations through strategic media engagement and improved community and industrial relations.

In 2004, Chiejina became the Deputy Managing Director (Corporate) of Total E&P Nigeria (Total Energies), making him the first DMD of the company, where he was responsible for overseeing both Public and Government Relations, Human Resources, Internal Communications, Community Affairs, Sustainable Development, Logistics and Security. He retired in 2007 after a distinguished career, where he was acclaimed for his pragmatic approach to complex corporate issues.[1]

On the 23rd of February 2016, He was appointed by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, to the National Stakeholders Working Group (NSWG) otherwise known as Governing Board for the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), as a member and representative of the South-South Geo-political Zone.[2]

Chiejina served on the Board of Access Bank Plc from 2005 to 2017[3], where he provided strategic leadership during a period of significant growth for the bank[4]. He also served as a Director at Staco Insurance Plc from 2007 to 2015 and currently sits on the Boards of FCSL Asset Management.

Other Ventures

Chiejina was the CEO of Ashbard Energy, and now Chairman of the firm where he continues to provide strategic guidance. He is also the Chairman of Catering and Facilities Solutions Ltd, which provides onshore and offshore catering and facilities management. His diverse portfolio includes ventures in Energy, Finance, FMCG and Asset Management.

Philanthropy

Emmanuel Chiejina is known for his discreet but impactful philanthropic efforts. He has sponsored several educational programs, including the Emmanuel Chiejina Prize for the best graduating student at the Institute of Petroleum and Energy Studies, University of Port Harcourt. He also sponsors the Prof. W.F. Feuser Prize for the best student in Literary Arts at the same university. His foundation has provided scholarships for undergraduate students from his native community of Ubulu-Uku, Delta State, ensuring opportunities in tertiary education for many underprivileged youths.

In his earlier role, Chiejina's commitment to supporting education and fostering entrepreneurship among Nigerian youths was reflected in his advisory role at Faith Foundation; a non-governmental organization dedicated to youth empowerment and entrepreneurship development.

Awards and Memberships

Chiejina has received numerous awards and honours throughout his career. He has been a member of the Governing Council of the University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, and served as Chairman of the Institute of Petroleum and Energy Studies, a collaboration between TotalEnergies and IFP (France), and the University of Port Harcourt. He also served on the Presidential Task Force on Oil and Gas Installation Security.

He is listed in Nigeria’s Who’s Who and is also a life member of the Port Harcourt Club. He is known as the "Doyen of Golf".

Personal Life

Emmanuel is a well-travelled individual who maintains a quiet profile when it comes to his personal life. He is married to Ibifiri Rosemary Hart. Together, they have two children: Louisa Ashikodi Chiejina – an entrepreneur with a focus on Academia, International Relations and Property Investment and Alexander Bardi Chiejina – a creative artist and Commodities Trader. Emmanuel is widely consulted by international bodies for his knowledge and insights into management, negotiations, and organisational behaviour. Outside of his professional achievements, Emmanuel is an avid golfer and a musical historian, with a particular interest in exploring the evolution and cultural significance of music across genres and eras, especially jazz, R and B and Hip-hop. His love for music and sport reflects his broader life philosophy of ‘Live and let live.’, emphasizing balance, appreciation, and coexistence
