Ellis Jones is a British film director and actor. In recent years, he has been involved in training and directing student actors, for 16 years as a resident director at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) London. He became known for his role as the young apprentice Hal Adden, in the 1970s children's comedy series Pardon My Genie.[1] He went on to appear in many other television productions, such as The Squirrels, 1914 All Out, King Lear, and Measure for Measure.
Career
[edit]Jones was born in Petersfield, Hampshire, and spent his early years in Cardiff before moving to Hull, where he went to a co-educational grammar school, Kingston High. After graduating from the drama department of Manchester University, he worked as an actor, director, and writer in theatre, radio, and television, and was awarded an Arts Council Associate Director's Bursary in 1984. He has directed at many British regional theatres,[1] and from 1990 to 1993, was artistic director of the Century Theatre, Keswick, the precursor of the Theatre by the Lake.
He joined the RADA as head of acting in 1993, was the academy's vice principal from 1998 to 2003, and creative cirector of RADA Enterprises from 2003 to 2009. In 2003, he created a programme of classic plays featuring RADA graduates on board the Cunard ocean liner the Queen Mary 2. He is lecturer in London Theatre for the New York University Tisch School of the Arts, and during 2010-11 was consultant director of acting programmes for Tisch Asia, Singapore. He is also a guest director at the Shanghai Theatre Academy, China.[1]
Jones joined the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) as the Head of Acting in 1993.[1] He later became the academy's Vice-Principal in 1998 and contributed to the training of numerous notable actors.[1]
He also worked with the Shanghai Theatre Academy and NYU Tisch School of the Arts.[2]
In the 1970s, he was known for his acting roles before transitioning to directing and teaching.[3]
Ellis Jones is a British actor, director, and acting coach known for his extensive work in theatre, television, and education. He has held notable positions in prestigious institutions and has contributed significantly to the performing arts industry.
Having worked extensively in recent years in theatre training, directing and producing, Ellis Jones recently made a cautious return to performing, as understudy to Kenneth Cranham in London's West End and on tour in Florian Zeller's award-winning play "The Father", and since then has been quite busy in film and television. In 2022 he will be seen in "The Thief, his Wife and the Canoe" (ITV), "Day Ten" (Kenwright Films), "The Tuckers" (BBC Wales) and "The Contract" (Woods Productions)[1]
Career in Acting and Theatre
[edit]Jones began his acting career in theatre and television during the 1970s. He appeared in popular British TV shows such as the sitcom The Squirrels and the children’s fantasy series Pardon My Genie.[4] He also appeared in the Doctor Who serial Spearhead from Space.
In recent years, he had a role in the 2021 television series The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe.
Educational Contributions
[edit]Jones also worked with the New York University Tisch School of the Arts in London, where he was part of the faculty until 2021.[5] Additionally, he collaborated with Peking University in Beijing on international academic programs.[6]
Work as a Director and Author
[edit]Jones has directed numerous theatrical productions, including Miss Wilson’s Waterloo at the Finborough Theatre.[7]
He is also the author of the book Acting Yourself, part of the Teach Yourself series.[8][9]
