Éitermillen (French: Oetrange Moulin) is a settlement near Moutfort in the Commune of Contern in Luxembourg. It is located on the E29 main road. Éitermillen is on the site of a former mill, hence the name Éitermillen.[1][2][3]

Éitermillen is elevated 265 metres above sea level and is in post code area L-5331.[4][5][6]

History

[edit]

Eitermillen's history is complicated as the name has referred to 2 different places simultaneously. Initially Eitermillen referred to the newly constructed mill at the edge of the Stuwelsbesch forest near Oetrange. Today the place is now commonly referred to as Maulin Diderich named after the owners is the 19th Century. This original construction dates back to 1311. Through until the 20th Century, the mill was used exclusively to make bread. Later on it also became a wine cellar and a venue for events. In 1906 the Patriarch of the family who ran the mill was found dead having drowned in the mill pond, the cause of the accident remains unknown. The mill changed hands several times over the course of the 20th Century. Today the mill still remains located at the end of the road "Cité Raoul Follereau".

The area now known as Eitermillen began with the construction of a building in 1897 which in 1969 became the restaurant "Hostellerie La Cheminée". In 1974 a traffic collision destroyed the Chimney attached the building. The restaurant would later become Ma Langue Sourit, a 2 michelin star restaurant which is still located there to this day.[7]

Status and Scope

[edit]

Eitermillen was officially recognised as a Lieu-Dit and has been since at least 1887 where it was also listed in the census as having a population of 8. However back then this referred to current day Maulin Diderich.[8] The area known as Eitermillen has changed significantly over time now referring to the area on the E29 main road adjacent to Moutfort.[2] Throughout the duration of the 21st Century, new housing developments on "Rue du Moulin" and on "Route de Remich" (E29) have been encompassed within the scope of Eitermillen.
