Eileen O'Neill Burke[1], born in either 1966 or 1967, is the current[2] State's Attorney for Cook County, Illinois, United States. Prior to serving as State's Attorney, O'Neill Burke was a Justice in the First District of the Illinois Appellate Court (2016–2023)[3] and a Judge in the Circuit Court of Cook County (2008–2016).[4]

O'Neill Burke began her term as Cook County State's Attorney on December 1, 2024[5] and appointed Hon. Anna H. Demacopoulos (Ret.) to serve as First Assistant State's Attorney.[6]

During her first few days in office, O'Neill Burke implemented numerous policy changes.[5] Those policy changes include a mandate for Assistant State's Attorneys (ASAs) to file a petition for pretrial detention for every defendant charged with murder or a violent Class X felony, which includes aggravated arson, aggravated battery of a child, aggravated kidnapping, aggravated vehicular hijacking, armed robbery, home invasion and solicitation of murder.[7] Additionally, ASAs must file a petition for detention for defendants charged with detainable felonies while using or possessing a firearm, domestic violence involving a weapon, sex offenses involving victims under 13 years old, and possession of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM).[7]

Personal life

O'Neill Burke has been married to her husband John, a law school classmate, for 34 years.[8] The couple has four children.[9]
