Dzul Iskandar, also known as Mohammad Dzul Iskandar Bin Shamsol, is a filmmaker and cinematographer from Brunei Darussalam, born on October 31, 1995. He has garnered recognition for his contributions to the local film industry in Brunei Darussalam.[1]
Early Career
[edit]Dzul began his filmmaking journey in late 2016, initially using a smartphone for video production before transitioning to Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras. His early works included short films such as "Hutang" and "Life from There," which helped establish his reputation as a talented filmmaker. [2]
Notable Works
[edit]"Gelombang": This short film premiered at the Empire Times Cineplex and was selected for screening at the BINISAYA Film Festival in 2020, marking Dzul's entry into the international film scene. "Tabooka": Nominated for Best Lighting and Cinematography at the Brunei Content Film Festival in 2022, showcasing his skills in cinematography. "Nilai Part 1": Released in 2023, this short film won the Best Short Film award in the Institute of Higher Learning Open Category at the Brunei Content Festival, competing against 96 other films. Achievement
[edit]In 2023, Dzul Iskandar's film "Nilai Part 1" achieved significant recognition by winning the Best Short Film award in the Institute of Higher Learning Open Category at the Brunei Content Festival. This accolade was particularly notable as it competed against 96 other shortlisted films, underscoring the film's quality and impact within the Bruneian cinematic landscape. The award highlights Dzul's commitment to storytelling and his role in enhancing the visibility of Bruneian narratives in the film industry.[5]
In July 2024, Dzul Iskandar's short film "Love’s Detour: From Crush to Crash" was selected for screening at the 20th Mini Film Festival in Sarawak, Malaysia, as part of a special program titled “Through Bruneian Eyes: Films that Speak Our Stories.” This program featured four short films made by Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) Design and Creative Industries students, highlighting the unique perspectives of Bruneians.
