Duncan Wanblad born in 1967 is a South African businessman and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Anglo American plc, a leading global mining company. He assumed the role on April 19, 2022, succeeding Mark Cutifani. Wanblad has been with Anglo American since 1990 and has held several senior leadership positions within the company.[1]

Early Life and Education

Wanblad was born in South Africa in 1967. He attended St. John’s College in Johannesburg for his early education and later went on to study at the University of the Witwatersrand, where he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. He also completed a business management program at Harvard Business School.

Career

Wanblad began his career at Anglo American in 1990. Over the years, he held a variety of operational and executive roles within the company. In 2004, he was appointed CEO of Anglo American Base Metals Division, where he oversaw operations in the copper, nickel, zinc, and mineral sands sectors. He played a key role in the growth and development of the company's base metals portfolio, particularly in Latin America.

From 2009 to 2013, Wanblad served as the Group Director of Projects & Development, where he led Anglo American’s global capital projects across different mining sectors, including platinum, diamonds, and iron ore.

In 2022, Wanblad succeeded Mark Cutifani as the CEO of Anglo American. His leadership focuses on enhancing operational efficiency, promoting innovation in mining technology, and driving the company’s sustainability agenda, particularly regarding carbon neutrality and decarbonization efforts. Under Wanblad’s leadership, Anglo American has continued to expand its commitment to responsible mining and renewable energy initiatives, aimed at reducing the environmental impact of its operations.[2]

Duncan Wanblad is married with three children. He is an advocate for education and sustainability, often emphasizing the importance of long-term value creation for communities surrounding mining operations.
