Dr. Moung Usha Thowai, a well-known specialist physician, is an erstwhile medical officer of the district hospital. He was born in the hilly wilderness of Chittagong, Bangladesh in 1950 and had a childhood full of struggles. He had five siblings excluding him, one younger sister died in 2024. His education began under the guidance of a Brahmin teacher in the primary village school, he finished his fifth standard there and got admitted to the Narangiri Pilot High School against his father's will. The school was far away from his hometown. After that, he took admission in the Rangamati college and got involved in the progressive student's union, participating openly in active student's politics of Rangamati during the Pakistan era right before the red eyes of Yahya khan's government and its reign of terror. In 1972, as soon as he completed his college study, he got opportunity to study Medical science in the Soviet union. He received Doctor of Medicine(MD)degree from the Crimea State Medical University in 1980 and afterwards, he came back to Bangladesh to join the State Health Commission. While working in the Bandarban Hospital as a resident medical officer, he went back to the Soviet union in order to pursue higher studies in 1987. After finishing higher study, he came back to Bandarban, Bangladesh in 1990 and settled down permanently in Bandarban.
The volatile political situation of Bandarban during the emergency of 1990 restored to normalcy under his auspices, but after realizing that the political situation of the country as a whole was not getting any better, he chose to refrain himself from politics.
He travelled across several countries in Asia and Europe over the years and got associated with rationalism, free thinking and evolution. A veteran tennis player and organizer, Dr. Moung is an icon in the tennis arena of Bangladesh. A few articles have been published by him of late while participating International seminars. Research and writing on evolution, however, is a rather recent development that has begun a couple of years ago.
