domain.co.nz also known as The Domain Name Company Limited is New Zealand's oldest continuing operating domain name registrar founded in August 1996.[1]. The Domain Name Company is a fully authorised .nz registrar[2] and fully accredited .uk registrar[3].
The company offers domain name registration and hosting services, alongside preferential registration of expiring domain names[4] in both New Zealand and the United Kingdom.
Early Controversy and Trademark Law
The company created controversy in its early years by registering a number of domain names which major global brands also laid claim to, these "David and Goliath" cases set early precendent around trademark rights and many registrations were subsequently abandoned as courts struggled to understand domain names and the emerging internet in the 1990's.
Trademark Law and the role of domain names continued to evolve over time[5] and partly as a result of these events, global registries adopted dispute resolution policies[6] which now provide a cost effective route without requiring recourse to the courts.
Support for Civil Liberties
The Domain Name Company Limited has been a profilic supporter of civil liberties, including LGBT rights[7], privacy rights and free speech. It also supports the New Zealand Tech Alliance[8]
