Dogs In A Pile is an American jam band from Asbury Park, New Jersey. They formed in 2019 featuring current members Jeremy Kaplan (keys/vocals), Brian Murray (guitarist/vocals), Joey Babick (drums), Jimmy Lawn (guitarist/vocals) and Sam Lucid (bassist/vocals).
History
[edit]Dogs In A Pile started when guitarist Jimmy Law and drummer Joey Babick began playing with each other as students of their respective educational music programs. Both members' fathers were longtime friends as well as being fans of jam band pioneers the Grateful Dead. They were then introduced to Berklee School of Music student and bass player Sam Lucid, who recommended fellow Berklee keyboard player Jeremy Kaplan. The final member of the band to join was Berklee student Brian Murray, who became fast friends on campus with Lucid after discovering their mutual love for similar music.[1][2]
The band's Northeast popularity grew substantially over their formative years after relocating to Asbury Park and building a loyal following of fans fondly referred to as the "Dog Pound"[3]. Shows at the local and legendary Stone Pony[4][5][6] in 2021 and 2022 continued their early-building success coupled with an extensive national touring schedule. Aside from their headlining dates in 2022, the Dogs also played in support of highly-regarded industry staples Pigeons Playing Ping Pong, Twiddle, the Disco Biscuits and Keller Williams.[7][8]
2023 was their most ambitious year yet with highlights including: their first time playing Jam Cruise[9], the release of their second studio album "Bloom"[10], a 36-date Winter Tour (including a Colorado residency and four sold out Denver shows), sold out headlining shows in Chicago, Pittsburgh, Raleigh, Richmond, and San Diego, their international debut in Iceland supporting the Disco Biscuits[11] and a 7,000-person attended set at The Peach Music Festival.[12] December included two sold out nights at The Stone Pony for their annual "Happy Howlidaze" event [13], a well attended Phish after-party at Sony Hall in New York City[14], and their very first New Year's headlining run in Saratoga Springs, New York at Putnam Place — both of which also sold out.[15]
The Dogs have a sizable live recording catalog on streaming services nugs.net and Bandcamp as well as a subscription service on the latter's platform.
Musical style and influences
[edit]Dogs In A Pile draw influence from a myriad of classic acts including but not limited to: Phish, Steely Dan, Frank Zappa, Grateful Dead, and The Flaming Lips. These influences merge funk, jazz, rock and roll and psychedelia to create a completely original sound and canvas for the band to play improvisational shows that heavily rely on their musical communication and cohesiveness.[16]
