Overview

[edit]

[edit] The third-generation Dodge Durango (WD) is a mid-size SUV introduced by Dodge for the 2011 model year. This model marked a significant evolution from its predecessors, combining rugged capability with modern refinement. Built on a unibody platform, the Durango shared its assembly line and many mechanical components with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, reflecting a shift towards a more refined and car-like driving experience without sacrificing its robust utility.

Unveiled at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show, the third-generation Durango was designed to cater to families and adventure enthusiasts alike, offering three rows of seating and a spacious interior that could comfortably accommodate up to seven passengers. The exterior design was sportier and more aerodynamic, featuring a bold front grille and sleek lines that conveyed both power and sophistication.

Under the hood, the Durango offered a range of powerful engine options, including a V6 and two V8 variants, providing ample towing capacity and performance. Advanced safety features and modern technology, such as an updated Uconnect infotainment system and various driver assistance systems, made the Durango a versatile and appealing choice in the mid-size SUV market.

Overall, the third-generation Dodge Durango stood out for its blend of practicality, comfort, and performance, making it a popular choice among consumers.

Updates

[edit]

[edit] 2014

In 2013, Dodge revealed the updated 2014 Durango at the New York International Auto Show. This model was refreshed with sportier lines, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and a design trim similar to the Rallye, featuring a blackened plastic bumper and outline. The taillights were redesigned with a single LED 'Racetrack' tail lamp, like the Charger and Dart. Inside, there was a new steering wheel, instrument cluster, rotary shift knob, and a reconfigurable 20-inch thin film transistor display, previously seen in the Dart.

2015

For 2015, the Durango R/T trim received a new package including the Premium Nappa Leather Group option with radar red leather seats, a 0.8-inch lower ride height, black headlamp bezels, HID low beams, and LED DRLs. Additional options included R/T embroidery on the seats, a nine-speaker sound system with a subwoofer, a 360 hp 5.7 L Hemi engine paired with ZF's eight-speed transmission, and 20-inch Granite Crystal wheels finished in black.

2016

In 2016, the Durango was upgraded with the Pentastar V6, which added Stop/Start, Variable Valve Lift, and improved engine refinement with a 15% better torque curve and increased Variable Valve Timing from 50 to 70 degrees. Other enhancements included Cooled EGR and friction reduction, resulting in an engine that weighed 4 pounds less. Power output and torque remained at 293 hp and 260 lb-ft for single exhaust or 295 hp and 260 lb-ft for dual exhaust. New packages included the Anodized Platinum package for the Citadel trim and the Brass Monkey package for the Limited trim.

2018

In 2017, the Limited trim was replaced by the new GT trim and the Base SXT trim was made available with three-row seating for seven passengers. For 2018, all models received new Uconnect radios and the second-generation ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. The rotary transmission gear shifter was replaced with a T-grip handle like in the Dodge Charger, and the steering wheel was updated to a more sporty design. Additional changes included suede insert leather seats and black chrome inserts in the interior for the GT model.

2019

For 2019, the Tow Group IV package added an integrated trailer brake controller, and the GT trim received the R/T- and SRT-style grille. A new GT Plus trim was introduced, which included heated front and second-row seats, a heated steering wheel, a 6-way passenger power seat with 4-way lumbar adjustment, two-position memory for the driver's seat, radio, and mirrors, a power liftgate, and a 150W inverter.

2021

In 2021, the Durango received updated exterior styling with a revised bumper and headlights, three grille textures, and six new wheel designs. The interior featured a new instrument panel with Uconnect 5; an 8.4-inch screen was standard on SXT and GT models, while R/T and Citadel models had a 10.1-inch touchscreen. An SRT Hellcat model with a 710 hp supercharged 6.2 L Hemi V8 was available for 2021 only, due to emissions requirements. With the discontinuation of the smaller Journey, the Durango became the only SUV in the Dodge lineup as of 2021.

2023

For 2023, Dodge restructured the Durango lineup, dividing each model into three trim levels: "Base", "Plus", and "Premium" (available on GT models and above). A new "HEMI Orange Edition" R/T model, based on the R/T Premium trim, added a HEMI Orange accent strip on the front hood, a HEMI Orange-accented Dodge emblem on the front grille, HEMI orange-painted brake calipers (with the R/T HEMI Orange Tow N Go Package), dark exterior accents, and HEMI orange stitching on the interior. The trim restructuring resulted in fewer available options and packages, with previous options now consolidated into the three trim levels. The SXT Plus carried a lower MSRP than the base SXT, starting at $40,140 versus $40,590. The SXT, SXT Plus, and GT trims featured the standard U Connect 5 8.4 infotainment system, while all other trims had the upgraded U Connect 5 10.1 infotainment system as standard equipment.
