Dobbeltgjenger is a Norwegian alternative rock band from Bergen, formed in 2015. Known for their eclectic sound and dynamic live performances, the band blends elements of rock, pop, and indie music.

History

[edit]

Formation and early releases (2015–2021)

[edit]

Dobbeltgjenger was founded in Bergen, Norway, and quickly gained attention for their unique fusion of darkness and brightness in their music. Their influences include Queens of the Stone Age, Talking Heads, Nine Inch Nails, and Peter Gabriel, which contribute to their distinctive sound. In 2016, the band released a six song EP entitled When I've Gone to Space and a lead single of the same name with a video[1]. which brought local exposure to the attention of Bergen's own Karisma Records.

In 2018, the band celebrated their first Karisma Records release- Limbohead, which received positive reviews for its innovative approach to alternative rock. The opening song "Tin Foil Hat" was recognized as a "great and memorable tune", while the single "Radio" was highlighted for its energetic vibe and creative composition.[2]. Additionally the track "Locking My Doors" is likened to having an infectious melody with David Byrne influences.[3]

Their 2021 release curried even more praise- "Smooth Failing" could easily appeal to fans and adherents of everything from alternative rock and hard rock and further on to prog rock and experimental pop music" [4] to "Smooth Failing" which offers festive and catchy melodies with funk, retro and sometimes disco accents"[5]. The band released three singles: "JOHANNA", "Building Skyscrapers", and "LIVING IN OVERDRIVE", and also released an official music video for "JOHANNA".[6]

New releases and new label partners (2023–present)

[edit]

Leading up to Dobbeltgjenger's next album The Twin's, the band partnered with their new management/distributor HQ Indie, in collaboration with Apollon Records. The band released four singles as well as three official music videos ("Pink"[7], "Frankenstein"[8], and "Rocket Shoes"[9].

Expanding their reach to North America, Dobbeltgjenger signed with Nashville based Soundcrest Music Group in 2023 to expanded their reach into the US and Canadian markets.[10] This partnership includes new releases: "Good-looking Human on the Side of the Road", "F.M.L." and "Credit Card."

"F.M.L." was released in January 2024, and delves into themes of chaos and emotion, reflecting lead singer Vegard Wikne's personal experiences with ADHD. This track has been praised for its raw intensity and lyrical depth.

Album Artwork Designers

[edit]

Dobbeltgjenger has primarily used two different artists for the artwork for their albums, and singles. Initially the band worked with Kristine Malde Lende for the albums Limbohead and Smooth Falling, and their corresponding single artwork. Then they pivoted to Canadian artist Sierra McLean for The Twins album, its singles, and the current singles for their upcoming album. When asked about how the band started working with McLean, Wikne said he stumbled upon her work on TikTok and felt that she has a playful and melancholic feel to her work with fits their music well.[11]

Wikne discusses A.D.H.D.

[edit]

Wikne, the vocalist and guitarist for Dobbeltgjenger, has openly discussed his experiences with A.D.H.D. In an interview, he revealed that A.D.H.D. has significantly influenced his life and music career. He described how the condition affects his concentration and daily routine, often leading to challenges in focusing on tasks. Despite these difficulties, Wikne embraces his A.D.H.D. as a source of creativity and energy, channeling it into his music and performances. His ability to harness the positive aspects of A.D.H.D. has contributed to Dobbeltgjenger's dynamic and eclectic sound. "Rocket Shoes" from The Twins was the first time there was an obvious and mentioned exploration of A.D.H.D. in relation to songwriting. The band's single from January 2024, "F.M.L." also explores Wikne's experience with A.D.H.D. The song's name even the name came from a particular day when his experience with A.D.H.D. was pretty bad.[12]
