Display Electronic Slurry (DES) is a brand of electronic paper (e-paper) technology developed and manufactured by Reinkstone and Wuxi Weifeng. DES technology uses a slurry-based system instead of traditional microcapsules or microcups to achieve higher resolution, enhanced color reproduction, and faster refresh rates. However, as a relatively new technology, DES is still in its early stages of development and currently lags behind the widely adopted E Ink technology in terms of market penetration, cost, and maturity.[1]

History

DES technology was conceptualized as a response to the limitations of traditional e-paper, such as restricted color reproduction and slow refresh rates. The first prototypes were developed in 2017. In 2021, the first commercial application of DES was realized with the Reinkstone R1 tablet[2], which is no longer listed on the company’s website.

Technical Features

  • The system employs a liquid slurry held between substrates, enabling higher pixel density and sharper image clarity compared to traditional methods.
  • Each pixel is isolated by a "cofferdam" structure, reducing ghosting effects and enhancing image stability.
  • The technology supports up to 4096 distinct colors, offering richer visuals than grayscale or limited-color e-paper.
  • Faster refresh rates allow for smoother dynamic and interactive content.
