Draft:Diary of a Wimpy Kid (online book)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is an online book that serves as a forerunner to the Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series written and illustrated by Jeff Kinney. It was released on FunBrain in 2004 and ran until 2005, having a total of 1,285 pages. The online book was removed from the site in August 2021, although an archived version of the book can be found on Internet Archive. The book does not exist in the same canon as the original series, however it was used as inspiration from the first eight books in the original book series.

Plot

[edit]

The plot is split into 10 months, ranging from September to June.

September

[edit]

Greg Heffley, the protagonist, says "this is a JOURNAL, not a diary." He mentions the fact that his mother, Ann Heffley (Susan Heffley in the main series) bought him a book that says "diary" on it so he can write down his feelings. Greg says that he writes in the book to get out of one chore (in Greg's case, scrubbing toilets) on Saturdays, saying that he does not want his older brother Rodrick to find out about the journal. Greg says that the main reason he agreed to write in the journal was so that people could read his life story as a kid when he gets rich and famous, but for now, he is "stuck in the seventh grade with a bunch of morons."

Greg recalls a prank Rodrick pulled on him during the summer and talks about his little brother Manny, who is constantly spoiled by his parents and gets away with each and every one of his wrongdoings. Greg then talks about a piece of cheese at his school that started a game called the "Cheese Touch", which ended last summer. He then goes into more detail about his father, Frank, and his best friend, Rowley Jefferson, as well as the fact that Greg is in danger of going to an all-boys high school called Bishop Garrigan (he wants to go to Crossland High School where there are both boys and girls).

October

[edit]

The month of October focuses on Greg's soccer team, his attempts to run for school treasurer, and Greg and Rowley's attempts to obtain candy and money during the Halloween season.

November

[edit]

November focuses on Greg trying to listen to rock-and-roll music, him being forced to audition for The Wizard of Oz play at his school, a joke he started up called "Invisible Chirag," and his dad trying to enroll him at Bishop Garrigan.

December

[edit]

Greg talks about a case of a missing dictionary belonging to one of his teachers, a wrestling unit in school, his bad Christmas experience, and his New Year's resolutions.

January

[edit]

Greg's New Year resolution is to help other people improve, as he belives that he doesn't need to. He mentions his grandpa's disgusting watercress salad that he had to eat on New Year's Day, the winter swim meets he has to go to (he was told that the swim coach held practices in the winter as well as the summer), his difficulty staying awake in his botany class, and dealing with Kenny Keith, who was mad at Greg for ruining his soccer season.

February

[edit]

The month of February revolves around Greg's birthday party, his attempts to take advantage of Rowley's now-broken arm, his failure to enter the town's winter talent show, and his experience with a laundry hoop he received as a Christmas gift.

March

[edit]

During March, Frank takes Greg and Rodrick to a movie. They run into Frank's former delinquent archenemy, Lenwood Heath, who was reformed at Spag Union Military School. After they chat about the latter's experience at military school, Frank attempts to sign Greg up for the military school, to Greg's dismay and worry, as he belives he cannot survive at a place like Spag Union. He tries to audition as the spokesperson for an ice cream company called "Peachy Breeze," believing he will become rich from it and simultaneously prevent his father from shipping him to military academy, to no avail.

April

[edit]

Greg talks about how he doesn't like Rodrick's April Fool's Day jokes, as they constantly involve the former getting injured in some way. He talks about his experience at Rowley's birthday party, a "Career Day" at his school, his experience at a nighttime church school, and his grandfather coming over to babysit him and his brothers.

May

[edit]

Frank reveals to Greg that the latter is officially enrolled at Spag Union and will start going there one month from now. Greg then believes that Frank wants to send him to military school so he doesn't end up like Rodrick. Greg then tries to spend the month doing everyone in his power to avoid being shipped out, such as joining a Boy Scout troop. He eventually gives up, but when the family goes to a half-birthday party for a neighbor's baby, Greg inadvertently prevents Frank from performing for the baby (Frank doesn't like performing) by accidentally landing on a beehive. After the incident, the Heffley family goes home, and Frank decides to not ship Greg off to military academy.

June

[edit]

Greg is still in disbelief that he isn't getting sent to military academy. He stays in bed until noon and then goes to Rowley's house. They meet a girl named Trista who just moved into a neighborhood, and Greg wants to become a second guest at the country club Rowley's family goes to. He finishes the book saying that his summer is coming together nicely.
