Devi Ram Gnyawali (born May 27, 1958) is a researcher and professor in the field of strategic management, at Pamplin College of Business, Virginia Tech with research interests in the concept of coopetition.[1] He began his career at the Ministry of Industry in Nepal before pursuing a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh. Since 1997, he has served in various academic roles at Virginia Tech. He currently holds the position of R. B. Pamplin Professor and since 2016, he has also been serving as the Head of the Department of Management.[2]
Career
[edit]Professional Career
[edit]Gnyawali started his professional journey as a Gazetted Officer at Nepal's Ministry of Industry, eventually becoming Deputy Secretary.[3] During this time, he was involved in initiatives to support small and micro-enterprises as part of a collaborative program between the Government of Nepal and German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ). [3]
Academic Career
[edit]Gnyawali began his academic career as a Ph.D. student and graduate instructor at the University of Pittsburgh. In early 1997, he taught as a visiting instructor at West Virginia University. Later that year, he joined Virginia Tech's Pamplin College of Business as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Management. Gnyawali was promoted to Associate Professor with Tenure in 2003 and to Professor in 2010, while also serving as Director of Graduate Studies.[3] In 2011, he was appointed the R. B. Pamplin Professor of Management.[4] Since December 2016, he has served as the Department Head of Management at the Pamplin College of Business [2]
Gnyawali has held editorial positions and published research in peer-reviewed journals. He was an Associate Editor for the Journal of Management (2014–2018) and a Special Issue Editor for Long Range Planning (2017–2019). His research has appeared in leading journals such as Academy of Management Review, Journal of Management, and Research Policy.[4] Additionally, he has presented his work at conferences,[1] like the Academy of Management Annual Meetings and the Strategic Management Society International Conferences, where he has participated in roles such as session chair, discussant, and panelist.[5][4]
Key Contributions and Research
[edit]Gnyawali’s work focuses on two interrelated areas.[1][6][7] The first area examines the impact of firms' positions in strategic alliances and inter-firm networks on their resource advantages or disadvantages and competitive actions.[8] He proposed a multi-level theory integrating interfirm networks and competitive dynamics, contributing to ongoing research in the field.[9][3][1] His work also explores how firms leverage both internal and external resources for strategic benefits,[10] including innovation and competitive positioning.
The second area of Gnyawali’s research is on coopetition, exploring the simultaneous competition and cooperation between firms. His early work developed theoretical frameworks and case-based insights on how coopetition influences firm behavior and outcomes, with a particular focus on large firms in high-technology industries[11] and small and medium entrepreneurial firms.[12] His recent work introduced the concept of coopetition capability, examining how it enables firms to navigate coopetition.[13][14]
Awards and Honors
[edit]Gnyawali has received several awards for his contributions to teaching and research,[15] including the Warren Holtzman Research Award[3][4] and Faculty Research Awards from Virginia Tech’s Department of Management.[3][4] In 2001, his work was recognized as a runner-up for the Academy of Management Review Best Paper Award.[3][4] He has also delivered presentations at academic conferences[16] such as the Strategic Management Society and the Academy of Management as well as at universities worldwide.[5]
