Detra Shaw-Wilder (born 1969 or 1970) is an American lawyer who is a nominee to serve as a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida.
Education
[edit]Shaw-Wilder earned a Bachelor of Science from the University of Florida in 1990 and a Juris Doctor from the University of Miami School of Law in 1994.[2]
Career
[edit]Since 1994, Shaw-Wilder has been an attorney in private practice at Kozyak Tropin & Throckmorton in Coral Gables, Florida, where she specializes in contract law, shareholder disputes, corporate finance, and complex commercial litigation.[3] From 2015 to 2017, she was managing partner of the firm and has served as general counsel for the firm since 2017.[2]
Nomination to district court
[edit]On March 20, 2024, President Joe Biden announced his intent to nominate Shaw-Wilder to serve as a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida.[2] Her nomination was praised by Congresswoman Frederica Wilson.[1][4] On March 21, 2024, her nomination was sent to the Senate. President Biden nominated Shaw-Wilder to the seat vacated by Judge Robert N. Scola Jr., who assumed senior status on October 31, 2023.[5] In June 2024, both Senators Marco Rubio and Rick Scott of Florida announced their intentions to withhold their respective blue slips for her nomination, saying that the White House did not properly consult them on her nomination beforehand.[6] Her nomination is pending before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
