Derrick Norman Lawley (1915 – February 27, 2012) was an English mathematician and statistician.
He is known mostly for his work in multivariate statistical analysis. His most influential work was the book with A. E. Maxwell, Factor Analysis as a Statistical Method (1963).
Lawley studied at Charterhouse and Clare College, Cambridge, obtaining BA in Mathematics in 1937. His first employment was at school of mental testing at Moray House, Edinburgh, where he became an expert in factor analysis. He was elected to the Royal Statistical Society in 1946 and Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1948. He joined the University of Aberdeen in 1946 as Lecturer in Statistics. In 1947 he moved to the same position at Edinburgh University, where he stayed in various roles until his retirement in 1982.
He was maried with Ruth Freeman (1948) and they had one dauther.
