Daryl Horner (Born 10 May 1998) is a skateboarder, designer, model, musician and artist from Manchester, UK. His loose, messy, maximalist approach to art has garnered attention in small circles within the Manchester art scene.
He has self-published 3 art books since 2020: ‘EYE THINK THEREFORE EYE AM’, ‘PIECE OF MIND’ and ‘EYE DON’T CARE’.
Early Life
[edit]Daryl was born to a single mother in Manchester, England; his father’s identity is unknown. As a child he spent most of his time alone in his bedroom writing stories, drawing pictures, writing song lyrics, watching movies and playing video games. He has described this period of his life as incredibly lonely.
At age 11 he started skateboarding, inspired by ’T.H.U.G’ and ’SKATE 3’. After a few years of learning the basics on the streets of Limeside and Failsworth he eventually ventured into Manchester City Centre where he began to get to know members of the skate scene, mostly older skaters who were more experienced with making their way through the city. He has since been an active part of the community, working at NOTE Skate Shop between the ages of 18 and 20. Before this he worked at a Wetherspoons as a kitchen porter/front of house.
Career
[edit]Horner was scouted at age 18 via Instagram to feature in a TOPMAN campaign, despite not being interested in modelling whatsoever he saw this as an opportunity to make what he considered “easy money” in order to afford weed and skateboards. This escalated into being taken on by a Manchester based modelling agency, leading to working for brands such as JD, Adidas, Napapijri and 032c. In 2020 he spent some time working in Tokyo for companies including Nylon Japan and YSL, after this he spent 2 months in a detention centre due to a complicated experience with LSD.
After getting home from Japan, Daryl’s mental health hit a sharp decline in the form of a spiritual awakening, spending time in and out of psychiatric wards over the course of the next 4 years due to visual/auditory hallucinations which he has since described as metaphysical visions.
