  • Comment: As stated by Greenman, appears to be WP:COI, and is overall written in an informal tone, with words such as "captivating visual storytelling" and "provide new perspectives" being present. SirMemeGod  01:04, 7 October 2024 (UTC)
  • Comment: See WP:COI. Sourcing needs to actually verify statements, for example in the early life section, the points about his teenage years and siblings are not mentioned in the source. Greenman (talk) 09:47, 17 September 2024 (UTC)

Damilola Michael Onafuwa is a Nigerian visual artist, documentary photographer, and filmmaker known for his work that highlights human interest stories and cultural narratives.[1] His captivating visual storytelling seeks to raise awareness of social issues and provide new perspectives on the lives of people across various communities.[2][3][4][5][6][7]

Early life

[edit]

Born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, Damilola developed an interest in exploring human cultures and the social dynamics that shape perceptions of the world. This interest laid the foundation for his career as a visual artist, where he aims to bridge the gap between the real and surreal through his works.[1]

Career

[edit]

Onafuwa began his professional journey in 2015 when he served as a photography consultant for UNICEF Nigeria's Hard to Reach Project. This role involved traveling across six Nigerian states—Bauchi, Borno, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, and Yobe—to document the social and economic challenges faced by communities in these areas.[7]

In February 2018, he curated his first solo photography exhibition titled "Angels Among Men" in collaboration with the Onome Akinlolu Majaro (OAM) Foundation. The exhibition aimed to address misconceptions about individuals born with albinism in Nigeria,[8][9] shedding light on their struggles and advocating for greater societal understanding. This initiative also led him to deliver a TEDx Talk titled "Understanding and Overcoming Myths Behind Biases", where he discussed the cultural stereotypes and daily realities faced by people with albinism.[10][11]

Onafuwa's work has garnered international recognition, leading to commissions from organizations such as Bloomberg, Heifer International, and various UN agencies, including UNICEF and UNOCHA. In 2019, he was nominated for the prestigious Joop Swart Masterclass by the World Press Photo Foundation and participated in the Global Short Docs Forum in Kyiv, Ukraine.[12]

In addition to his photography, Onafuwa has contributed to various publications, including Agbowó Magazine,[13] and has been involved in projects that document critical issues like hunger in northeast Nigeria for UNOCHA.[14]

Onafuwa is also the founder and creative director of StoryMaxima, a media and production services company based in Lagos. Established to enhance visual storytelling in Africa, StoryMaxima focuses on narrative change and aims to contribute positively to the representation of the African continent in the global media landscape.[15]

In 2022, he curated a portrait collection titled "Grandad's Possessions,"[16] featuring children among items left behind by his grandfather. More recently, in November 2023, he organized a two-day visual documentary storytelling workshop called "StoryMaxima’s Doc-You Mentary Bootcamp,"[15] designed to empower emerging documentary filmmakers and photographers.
