Damavand Mountaineering and Ski Club is the oldest mountaineering clubs in Iran.
History
[edit]In 1951, Mohammad Kazem Gilanpour, the first Iranian mountaineer to receive modern training in France, shared his knowledge with ten of Iran's top climbers, including Mohammad Azami, Eisa Omidvar, Farrokh Rahmdel, and Abdollah Rashtian, who later co-founded the club and laid its strong foundation.
Initially, the club operated in the Sport Palace (Park-e Shahr). Due to the growing number of members, it relocated to Boostan Varzesh (west of Amjadieh Stadium) and was named "Damavand Mountaineering and Ski Organization – Boostan Varzesh Club." In 1963, the organization moved to its current location and became "Damavand Mountaineering and Ski Club."
Changes and Development
[edit]In 1981, following legal changes, the club's name was altered to "Damavand Group" and in 1994, with a new permit from the Physical Education Organization, it became "Damavand Mountaineering and Ski Club." In 2005, it transformed into the non-profit "Damavand Mountaineering and Ski Club Sports Institute." Since then, members with over 10 years of experience have been recognized as shareholders of the institute.
Activities
[edit]The club is active in mountaineering, skiing, and conducting educational courses. These include introductory and advanced mountaineering, skiing, and specialized classes like mountain meteorology and technical equipment use. The club has been involved in numerous expeditions to both domestic and international peaks, playing a crucial role in the development of mountaineering in Iran.
Achievements
[edit]Throughout its history, Damavand Club has earned numerous accolades. One notable achievement is the publication of the "Avaye Damavand" magazine, which has been published periodically since 1984.
