The customs road of Basel airport, in German Flughafenstrasse and French route douanière de l'aéroport à Bâle is a road connecting Basel in Switzerland with the EuroAirport Basel Mulhouse Freiburg located in France. Even though the road crosses through French territory it is, by statute, connected to the Swiss road network.[1]

History

The status of the customs road has been established by the Convention franco-suisse relative à la construction et à l'exploitation de l'aéroport de Bâle-Mulhouse, à Blotzheim (the French-Swiss agreement relative to the construction and usage of the Basel-Mulhouse airport in Blotzheim) concluded in 1949.[1] The road was opened in 1953.

Status

[edit]

The airport and road are separated by a fence from the rest of the French customs territory. The road belongs to the sector of the airport which is affiliated with the Swiss services.[1] The French and Swiss authorities ensure a joint police control on this road. There are neither police nor customs checks performed on the road giving access to the airport at the French-Swiss border. Both governments still retain the right to perform checks in special circumstances.[1]

Route

[edit]

The road is connected with the Swiss main road 12 and the A3 highway, beginning a few meters from the French-Swiss Border. It runs along the French A35 highway and ends slightly more than 3 kilometers inside the airport zone. Connections with the French road network are made through three bridges and one footbridge.[citation needed]

Public transport

[edit]

The line 50 from BVB connects the Basl CFF train station to the airport along the customs road. Line 3 of the Basel tram network crosses over it in Saint-Louis.[citation needed]
