Background

[edit]

The Conflict in the Neutral Zone of Junik refers to a military engagement that occurred in 1921 between the Kachaks, a group of Kosovo Albanians, and the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (known as Yugoslavia after 1929). This conflict emerged in the Aftermath of the Dukagjini Uprising of 1921 where Kachaks under Azem Galica invaded Drenica and Dukagjini. The Neutral Zone of Junik was established by League of Nations to quell the Situation between Yugoslavia and Albania as an aftermath of their Conflict.[3] The Kachaks used this to their advantage and used the Zone as an Base.[4][5]

Course of the Conflict

[edit]

Invasion

[edit]

The Yugoslav military initially met with little resistance as they advanced into the Neutral Zone, intending to quell the Kachak insurgency.

Kachak Counteroffensive

[edit]

Under the leadership of Azem Galica, Kachak rebels regrouped and mobilized their forces. They utilized guerrilla tactics, leveraging their familiarity with the local landscape to launch surprise attacks against the invading troops.

End of the Conflict

[edit]

The conflict culminated in a significant victory for the Kachaks, who successfully pushed back the Yugoslav forces, maintaining control of the Neutral Zone and solidifying their resistance against Serbian authority.

Aftermath

[edit]

Later the Neutral Zone of Junik was successfully invaded in 1923 by Yugoslavia and Albania.[6]
