Clément Mondinat (born 29 October 2003) is a French rugby union player who plays as a Fly-half for Pau in the Top 14 and represents the France U20 team. He made his Top 14 debut with Pau on 1 October 2022.
Playing Career
[edit]Early Years
[edit]Mondinat began his rugby journey in 2008 at his hometown club, USC Pouyastruc. In 2017, he joined Tarbes as a junior player. Two years later, he moved to Pau to continue his development with the club's academy.
Professional Career
[edit]Clément Mondinat began his professional career in January 2021 during the 2021–22 Top 14 season, at the age of eighteen, playing in the 2021–22 EPCR Challenge Cup against CA Brive [1]. In May 2022, he was called up for a training camp with the France U20 team[2], though he did not play any official matches that year[3].
At the start of the 2022–23 Top 14 season, Mondinat gained attention in the 2022 Supersevens Series and was included in the professional squad for summer friendly matches[4]. Following Antoine Hastoy's departure to La Rochelle, Mondinat, alongside Thibault Debaes, was considered a potential successor[5]. His Top 14 debut came in October 2022 against RC Toulon during the 2022–23 Top 14 season.[6] In June 2023, he was selected for the 2023 World Rugby U20 Championship alongside three other Section Paloise players: Théo Attissogbé, Brent Liufau, and Hugo Auradou[7].
After serving as a substitute for the first two group matches, Mondinat delivered a standout performance in the third match against Wales, earning the Man of the Match title[8]. His performance included a flawless kicking display, successfully converting all six attempts[9]. At the end of the competition, he became a World Champion with the French U20 team after a dominant 50–14 victory in the final against Ireland, coming on as a substitute for Hugo Reus[10].
Despite his World Champion title during the summer, the 2023–24 Top 14 season has been challenging for Mondinat. He underwent knee surgery following an injury during the 2023 Supersevens Series, causing him to miss ten weeks[11]. Upon returning to play with the youth team, Mondinat fractured his thumb in February 2024, leading to another period of unavailability[12]. This absence came as Section Paloise faced a shortage of fly-halves, with Joe Simmonds injured and Thibault Debaes on loan to RC Vannes[13]. The team was left with only Axel Desperes as a fit fly-half[14].
The 2024–25 season is expected to be a breakthrough for the young player.[15] However, in August 2024, Mondinat suffered a meniscus injury that sidelined him for three months.[16]
International Career
[edit]Mondinat was part of the France U20 team that won the 2023 World Rugby U20 Championship.[17] He played four games during the tournament, including a standout performance against Wales where he scored a try and was named man of the match.[18]
