Christian Genzel (*1978 in Kassel, Germany) is a German filmmaker, film journalist and podcaster who lives in Salzburg, Austria.
Life
[edit]Christian Genzel studied English and American Studies at the University of Salzburg from 1999 to 2004 and wrote his master's thesis on the films of John Carpenter. From 2000 to 2005 he was a member of the theater group English Drama Group Salzburg.
Work as director, screenwriter and producer
[edit]After several short films, Genzel released the short film Schlaflos in 2006 with Max Simonischek and Stefan Murr in the leading roles. The film won the audience award in the fiction category at Salzburg's Film:riss festival in 2007.[1]
In 2011, Genzel's first feature film The Muse was released, a thriller starring Thomas Limpinsel and Henriette Müller.
His mystery short film Cinema dell' oscurità was nominated for 13th Street's Shocking Shorts Award in 2017.[2]
In 2019, Genzel directed Brezel Göring's play Unbehagen in der Mittelstufe with amateur actors at the Literaturhaus Salzburg.[3] Since 2020, Genzel has been producing documentaries and interview featurettes for various home video releases, including for the films Twister[4] and Pitch Black[5] and the series Knight Rider[6]. For a re-release of Peter Jackson's horror comedy The Frighteners, he created a feature-length documentary featuring interviews with actors Dee Wallace and Jake Busey, special effects artists Richard Taylor and Wes Takahashi, editor Jamie Selkirk, director of photography John Blick and production designer Grant Major[7].
In 2024, Genzel completed his documentary Finding Planet Porno: The Wild Journey of American Cinema's First Outlaw, which tells the story of the director Howard Ziehm. In addition to Ziehm himself, the film also features directors William Lustig and Mick Garris as well as actors William Dennis Hunt and Serena, erotic photographer Suze Randall and filmmaker Humphry Knipe. The documentary's world premiere was held at the Lausanne Underground Film and Music Festival in Switzerland in October 2024[8], followed by a German premiere at the Hof International Film Festival the same month[9].

Journalist and film historian
[edit]As a film journalist and film historian, Christian Genzel's articles have appeared in German and Austrian publications such as Salzburger Nachrichten, Film & TV Kamera, Ray, 35 Millimeter, Celluloid, Neon Zombie and on the web portal GMX. He also writes about music and retrogaming, including for the American company AllMusic and for the German GameStar magazine.[10]
He wrote essays for re-releases of films such as Flesh Gordon[11], Twister[4] and Shrooms [12]. For Cecil B. DeMille's historical epic The Crusades, Genzel recorded an audio commentary with journalist Clemens Williges and film scholar Dr. Christoph Seelinger[13].
At the University of Salzburg, Genzel taught and curated several film courses, with topics including "Film and Exile" and "Film and the Apocalypse". He also gave various guest lectures there, including on films such as Blair Witch Project, Easy Rider and Gummo[14].
Podcaster
[edit]Since 2016, Genzel has been hosting the film history podcast Lichtspielplatz, which was voted among the 10 best German-language film podcasts in 2021 and 2022 by the website film.at. The podcast's interview guests include filmmakers such as Nicholas Meyer, Jan de Bont, Dave Callaham, Zak Penn, Uwe Boll, John Ottman, Bert I. Gordon, Jamie Blanks and Steven de Souza, actor Sean Patrick Flanery and novelist Wolfgang Hohlbein.
Many interviews were also published in full length in the English-language companion podcast Talking Pictures. Apart from the Lichtspielplatz interviews, this podcast also features, among others, conversations with directors Jackie Kong and Mark W. Travis also appeared.[15]
Since 2023, Genzel, together with gaming journalist Heinrich Lenhardt, has also been hosting the podcast Pixelkino which deals with computer games based on movies as well as video game adaptations. Guests include director Uwe Boll and game designer Rex Bradford.[16] Since their third season which started in October 2024, Pixelkino has been distributed via retro gaming podcast Stay Forever.[17]
