Carmen Pilar Santos Cruz (11 May 1928-May 30, 1985) was a Puerto Rican educator.

Early and personal life

[edit]

Carmen Pilar Santos Cruz and her twin brother Jesús Santos Cruz were born in the costal town of Ceiba on 11 May 1928 to Catalino Santos Figueroa and Isabel Cruz Gómez. Growing up, Carmen was known as Carmelita or Pilar. Her parents had 18 children, 13 of whom survived childhood. Carmen completed her elementary and high school studies in Yabucoa and Humacao. She identified strongly with Humacao, where she grew up. She obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus.

Carmen's family suffered multiple losses in the late 1940s and early 1950s. One brother, Luis Santos Cruz, drowned in 1949. Another brother, Domingo Santos Cruz, was a teacher who died on November 7, 1950, at age 24, while serving in the U.S. military during the Korean War. Her twin brother, Jesús, also served in the military and died shortly after, at age 23, on September 22, 1951. Her father, Catalino, died in a car accident in 1952.[1]

Santos Cruz met her husband, Pablo Dávila Escribano, at a dance of the American Legion of the El Recreo Urbanization of the Municipality of Humacao. Dávila Escribano was born in the town of San Lorenzo but raised in the Municipality of Humacao. He was a veteran (1951-1953) and an athlete. They married on 23 December 1956 and settled in Rio Piedras, San Juan, where she continued to work as an elementary school teacher. The couple had two children: Pablo R. Dávila Santos, an economist and bank manager, known by his family and closest friends as Pablito, and Pilar Del S. Dávila Santos, a biologist and professor with a doctorate in education, known by her family as Pilarcita. Santos Cruz later had grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Career

[edit]

Santos Cruz began her career as a primary school teacher at the Regalada Rivera School in Humacao. At that time, she had the opportunity to offer a demonstration class on reading teaching led by Prof. Ángeles Pastor. On that occasion, she received a Certificate of Merit for her services in demonstration classes on reading teaching. She also worked in Río Piedras, San Juan at: the Second Unit School in Caimito, the Evaristo Ribera Chevremont Community School in Vista Hermosa, and the Juan B. Heike School in Altamesa (Santos Vda.de García de la Noceda, R., 1990). In 1973, she arrived at the Patagonia School, located at Bda Patagonia #50 Humacao, Puerto Rico, where she worked as a reading teacher, leaving behind a great variety of teaching materials that she prepared as a memory of that experience. She dedicated the last four years to teaching reading skills (Santos Vda. De García de la Noceda, 1990). In 1983, her last year of service, the 6th grade graduation ceremonies were dedicated to her.

Santos Cruz died on May 30, 1985 at the age of 57 from breast cancer.
