Carly-Jay Metcalfe (born 1976) is a writer of memoir, nonfiction and literary fiction from Queensland, Australia. Metcalfe was born with Cystic Fibrosis and at the age of 21, she had a double lung transplant. At this time, she had less than a week to live. At the age of thirty, she survived a rare gynaecological cancer.
Her critically acclaimed memoir Breath[1] was published by University of Queensland Press in 2024. It has received widespread critical acclaim from noted literary critics and writers such as Caroline Overington (The Australian), Cass Moriarty[2], Fiona Wright[3], and others.[4]
She has spoken and written about her life with Cystic Fibrosis, organ donation advocacy, transplantation, and the need to have more honest conversations about dying and death. Metcalfe delivered a TED-X talk in 2014 called 'Learning to Die'[5] Her views on these topics have garnered frequent and widespread national media attention.[6][7][8][9][10][11][12]
