Draft:Canadian Lawyers for International Human Rights

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Canadian Lawyers for International Human Rights (CLAIHR) is a non-profit human rights organization based in Canada.[1][2] Founded in 1992 by leading Canadian international lawyers, such as Stephen Toope and Donald Malcolm McRae, CLAIHR has been involved in several major cases before the Supreme Court of Canada that touch on issues concerning international human rights law.[3][4][5][6][7]

Recently, CLAIHR received significant media attention for its role in bringing a lawsuit against the Government of Canada to prevent the approval of weapons and arms transfers from Canada to Israel.[8][9] In January 2023, in the midst of the Gaza Genocide, CLAIHR led a coalition in calling on Global Affairs Canada to immediately halt the transfer of military and technology exports to Israel. In the letter, CLAIHR claimed that issuing export permits for military goods and technology to Israel violates Canadian law and international law.[10] The group then filed a lawsuit in the Federal Court of Canada against Global Affairs Canada in March 2024, alleging that the military items that are sent to Israel from Canada could be used to commit or facilitate serious violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law.[8][11][12] Barbara Jackman is one of the lawyers representing CLAIHR in the ongoing lawsuit.[13]
