Brian Reichle was born August 4, 1974, and grew up in Columbus, Ohio. He is an American podcaster, producer, director and stand-up comedian more commonly known as Brian Redban, a pseudonym he derived from red band movie trailers and has been using on the internet since 1997.[1]
He is best known as the founder of the DEATHSQUAD podcast network[2] and the producer and co-host of The Joe Rogan Experience.[3]
Redban has been performing stand-up comedy since 2003. He currently lives in Burbank, California, and is of German descent. He is an outspoken fan of cats and the Olive Garden.[4]
Early career
[edit]While living in Ohio, Redban contacted Nine Inch Nails for an interview under the false pretense he ran a popular fanzine. When he got a response and was asked to produce the zine, he was forced to create a copy just for the opportunity. Impressed by his demo, Redban was given all-access permission to videotape and photograph the band. After working with Nine Inch Nails and Ween, he shifted his focus to comedians, doing some recording for Doug Stanhope and Joe Rogan.
Rogan contacted him afterward to find out his employment status – at the time, Redban worked for Gateway, and production was only his hobby. Rogan offered him a full-time position as his personal videographer and webmaster if he was willing to relocate to Los Angeles. Redban accepted the offer the same week Gateway closed all of their retail stores.[5][6]
The Joe Rogan Experience
[edit]Redban moved to California in 2004 and began producing The Joe Show, a series of short videos he filmed, edited and uploaded himself, using footage he accumulated while following Joe Rogan's performances throughout Los Angeles while on the road.[7]
The series surged in popularity after releasing an episode documenting the now-legendary argument between Rogan and Carlos Mencia.
The incident occurred on February 10, 2007, at The Comedy Store in Hollywood. Joe Rogan took the stage during Mencia's set to confront him about stealing material from fellow comedians, including his friend, Ari Shaffir. Shaffir also took the stage, backing Rogan's claims. Redban caught the entire event on tape, edited it together with testimonials from other comedians, and released it online as an episode of The Joe Show.[8] The video went viral, receiving millions of hits worldwide.[9][10]
In 2009, Redban began to produce and co-host[11] The Joe Rogan Experience, a venture that began as a video-only web show, and later offered an audio-only version of each episode. The show continues to broadcast weekly, can be downloaded in either format, and is consistently rated one of the top comedy podcasts on iTunes.[12][13][14]
In addition to iTunes, Stitcher Radio and Vimeo, JRE began airing on Opie & Anthony's channel The Virus on Sirius XM in 2011, and can be heard Saturdays at noon ET and Sundays at 4am ET.[15][16]
DEATHSQUAD
[edit]DEATHSQUAD is a podcast network created and run by Brian Redban.
The name originates from his visit to Opie & Anthony in 2006, along with Joe Rogan, Duncan Trussell, Joey Diaz, Ari Shaffir, Eddie Bravo, Tait Fletcher and Matt Kirsch. Upon the group's arrival, host Gregg “Opie” Hughes commented, “Here comes the Deathsquad."[17]
Redban created DEATHSQUAD in 2006 primarily to release short videos on iTunes and MySpace. In 2009, he used the label to release audio podcasts with Joey Diaz, but decided he would rather focus on projects that incorporated video as well. He relaunched the network in 2010 after setting up a home studio in his Burbank apartment.[18]
In 2011, Redban moved the DEATHSQUAD studio to its current location at The Ice House (comedy club) in Pasadena, California. The venue holds weekly DEATHSQUAD stand-up shows featuring Redban and the comedians on his network.[19] During the show, the performers use the studio as a green room – their discussions stream live and are released as The Ice House Chronicles.[20]
Redban appears on and acts as executive producer, director and recording engineer for every podcast on DEATHSQUAD.
