Timothy O’Neal Mills, professionally Black Kray[a] (born 23 February), also known as Sickboyrari,[a] is an American rapper, producer, and songwriter known for his influence on the cloud rap, emo rap, and tread genres. He is a founding member of the hip-hop collective and label Goth Money Records[a] and an early member of Raider Klan. Rari has collaborated with many similar artists, including Working on Dying, Bladee, Yung Lean, TeamSESH, Thraxxhouse, City Morgue, Chxpo, DJ Kenn, and DJ Smokey. His music has been described as melodic, hazy, and ethereal.[1][2]
Early life
[edit]Rari was born 23 February[3] in Richmond, Virginia before moving to Ashland sometime during his childhood. He began skateboarding in 2006 which played a vital role in his development,[4] claiming he would skate at a local skatepark "all day, every day".[5] His father owned many CDs and DVDs, causing music and similar media to become a large part of Rari's identity as well.[4]
He spent most of his youth in "the sticks" of Ashland, a place he refers to as "Elm Street" and the "Dirt Road". Alongside skateboarding, he would spend time with his family and cousins, smoking marijuana and playing video games.[5]
Growing up, Rari was alienated by his peers and stuck to his group of similar people. He felt like an outsider to the many goth cliques in his school and faced backlash for being different than them. He described himself as "the Black version of those goth kids".[4] He faced resistance for skateboarding and wearing skinny jeans, as doing so was still considered "white" at the time. Rari and his Black peers also faced racism and would often go out of their way to avoid certain sections of town out of fear that white people would call the police on them.[5]
Career
[edit]Rari released his first song on MySpace when he was in the 7th grade.[6]
2009-2013: Beginnings and formation of Goth Money Records
[edit]Rari began making music "'round 2009/2010 just bullshittin' 'round on a laptop mic."[7] He was a member of Raider Klan and their skate team around this time.[8]
Around 2012, Rari began to form Goth Money Records alongside Karmah and Hunned Mill (a.k.a. Hunned Stackz) whom he met in school. He then met Marcy Mane (a.k.a. MFK) over YouTube when searching for trillwave beats. After moving to Los Angeles, California in 2013, he met Kane Grocerys (a.k.a. YSB OG). Luckaleannn then joined after meeting Rari over the internet. At some point, L.V.X. joined, whom he also met in school.[5] Yung Jugg, Gothlord, and Kons were also members around 2014.[7] As of August 2024, Goth Money Records consists of Black Kray, Hunned Mill, Kane Grocerys, and Luckaleannn.[9]
2012s Crack Clouds Over Art$$ Kitchen and its 2013 rerelease, is often credited as the most underrated mixtape ever (The authors name is not avalible, however many fans on RateMyMusic.com rated Crack Clouds Over Art$$ Kitchen 5 stars). The tape includes many fan favorites such as Hydr6cod0n$, 80 Dime Bagz Boomin like Alicia Keys and IceCream&Swishas. Despite fans wanting Crack Clouds Over Art$$ Kitchen on CD and vinyl, due to the rerelease having Timothy wearing an Iron Maiden The Number of the Beast t shirt, the tape cannot be sold on physical releases.
2014-2018 The peak of Black Krays career.
In 2014, Timothy released the mixtape Thug Angel. The album cover for it immediately became infamous in Goth Money history due to its almost unserious design. The tape included many great tracks like Hood Angels and Uzi Kiss[10], but what stood out the most was Shorty 13 Onah Block. Despite the song being 1:48 in length, the song still recieved mass praise due to its sporadic snares, melancholic piano and Raris sleep-like flow.
Throughout the years 2014-2018, Kray went on an insane feature run, being on albums and tapes such as Chris Travis’ Pizza and Codeine, City Morgues Hell or High Water, Yung Leans Warlord (Deluxe), etc.
In 2015, Mills released a plethora mixtapes including Trillionaires, Shitty Sickboy, SOULJA LUV RARI WORLD and STILL STRUGLIN STILL SHINNIN. These mixtapes were also released during the time when Black Kray collaborated with other Goth Money members more such as Kane’s Grocery, Marcy Mane, and affiliated producers like Purpdogg and F1LTHY.
After 2015, Kray released a few mixtapes. On the 9th of March he released a chopped and screwed remix of the Trillionaires mixtape[11]. A few days later on the 14th of March he released the B-side to Shitty Sickboy.[12] However the B side was just 4 tracks long, due to it being an EP not a mixtape. On the 20th of April, Mills released [13]NITEMARE ON ELM ST, which was the first non-remix or B side mixtape of 2016 up to this point. NITEMARE ON ELM ST's title was obviously a nod to The Nightmare on Elm Street, which was to be expected due to the magical and nightmarish sound of Black Kray perfectly matching the atmosphere of horror media. Progressing to the short year of 2017, Kray unfortunately only released 1 mixtape and 1 EP. On the 22nd of May 2017, the mixtape 4000 DAGREEZ was uploaded[14]. According to the owner of the BLACK KRAY ARCHVE account, some songs on the tape have different mixes and different verses, however no clear explanation was given besides some files being different: ″MOST SONGS ARE IDENTICAL TO THE ONE ON THE RELEASE ! keep in mind, although there are a few tracks that have different mixes or verses than the one on the release. i am not going to go through all of them″. On the 10th of December, Kray released the closing EP for 2017 WEEPN N DA TRENCH[15]. The era for this EP was very bland and short lived, but it showed signs of a new era emerging.
on August 2018, a 4 track EP titled CRADLE 2 DA GRAVE was announced, but ultimately never released, therefore the remnants of what this project was supposed to be were reuploaded by the BLACK KRAY ARCHIVE[16]. Another project the BLACK KRAY ARCHIVE reuploaded was interestingly also titled CRADLE 2 DA GRAVE. The tape uses the same 4 tracks from the previous EP as well as other tracks. This version of C2DG would be considered a bootleg[17], due to a majority of the tracks being unreleased and confirmed tracks that were supposed to be on the tape. C2DG was originally announced August of 2018, postponed to October 31st, and was never released up until mid 2019.
The Glime Era 2019-present
[edit]This era picked up from Krays old goth aesthetic and evolved it even further. On the 7th of June 2019, Mills released the 8 track mixtape EURO GLIME[18] The mixtape seemed to draw alot from the rage and plugg subgenres, as seen with the more weaker snares, rattling hi hats, synth leads and creamy 808s. A year later in 2020, Mills released Nokia Talk 2002. [19] The album had head-nodding tracks such as Gasoline, Kelly Rowland, and Off da Rip.
In the following years, many started to question if Kray was a zionist, due to his Instagram bio using Hebrew text and many references to Israeli culture[20]. Many argued it was just an aesthetic and a metaphor for this new era, some did claim he was a zionist, and some even made the bold claim that he is Jewish.
Currently, almost every Black Kray mixtape and EP is posted on the BLACK KRAY ARCHIVE profile on soundcloud, Krays own soundcloud profile, bandcamp, or a variety of unofficial black kray profiles on Spotify.
Musical style and influence
[edit]Rari has cited Lil B, Yellowman, Big Youth, Gregory Isaacs, Daringer, John Holt, Cults, Wolf Parade, Chief Keef, Lil Prada, Best Coast, Salem, Crim3s, and White Ring as some of his influences.[4][7]
Visually it is easy to see that No Limit Records has had a huge influence of Black Krays album covers. Covers for tapes such as 700 DAGREEZ,[21] Shitty Sickboy[22], 1 PHONE 10 BEEPAH$$$[23] and Thug Angel[24] use the same braggadocious luxury style with large bended text, diamonds, firearms or luxury assets, etc. Which is reminiscent of No Limits album covers.
