Bento António Caparica (Santa Catarina, Lisbon, Portugal, 1866) was a Portuguese coachman and employee of the Royal House, best known for driving the landau during the assassination of King Carlos I and Prince Luís Filipe, in 1908.

Life

Bento António Caparica was born in 1866, Santa Catarina, Lisbon, Portugal.[1] He was the son of Alexandre António Caparica and Isabel Maria.[1] He worked as a coachman and was employed by the Portuguese Royal House.[1] On February 1, 1908, Caparica was driving the royal landau when anarchists assassinated King Carlos I and his eldest son, Prince Luís Filipe, in Lisbon. During the attack, Caparica was wounded by gunfire, despite the attack, Caparica remained calm and continued to drive the royal family from Praça do Comércio to the Arsenal de Marinha.[2]

He married Isabel Maria da Conceição Leitão, whom he had 2 children with, Eugénio António Caparica and Luísa Caparica.[1]
